TFsean - too kind mate, but what exactly do you mean by the local values of materials? Could you give an example pretty please with a cherry on top!
rastaray - thanks for stopping by, with each new painting the only way is up! ;D Actually that's not true, I continue to make crap too but that's how we learn haha
Gpozzo - thank you so much, the mystery element was paramount to those pieces in particular so I'm glad it came through! The people in the enviros are in there for no other reason than scale, in a strange way I feel I tend to want to look at what they are looking at too, like when you see someone in the street staring into the sky you have to look too !
Pixeltuner - haha I never stopped! Long time mate, hope things are well with you
Duplicitious - great crit! Thanks I see what you mean, and will definitely be keeping it in mind for my new stuff. It's funny because I hate that glacier piece lol To each his own I geuss!

Been busy writing, so haven’t updated in a bit. Anyways here’s some new stuff

New Amsterdam, Blade Runner inspired. The canals have long dried out leaving huge tunnels of flying cars, I couldn’t help but make flying car sounds whilst painting this -

Re-worked an older painting, thinking about how to layer interesting tree shapes and roots to give the appearance of faces and living things, would make for a cool optical illusion game enviro -

I’ve recently been experimenting a lot with Autodesk Sketchbook. It completely slows down my process and forces me to think about core shapes, I’m really learning a lot from using it -

Redrew another old one, a Bane inspired werewolf thingy bob -

Some quick char sketches, but this week I've mostly been studying vehicle and industrial design. This is my first real attempt at a conceptual vehicle. I decided to get into vehicles for a few reasons, firstly because I needed to learn how man made stuff works, and fit's together. I needed such a piece in my folio to round it off, also style wise. At first I didn't think I'd enjoy it, because granted - industrial design and vehicles are hard and perhaps not as appealing as characters. But when I started to learn about it and concept it, sure it was challenging but the most fun I've had with a piece in a long time. Really surprised myself, you never know what you like until you try it. There will be a lot more vehicles to come! I would love to see more vehicles on the art sketchbooks, just treat them like you would a character, you start to feel your way around forms and experiment with how for example it's balanced depending on cockpit location etc. Inspired by John Parks awesome stuff.

Izene - haha thanks ;D but there must be something you don't like! I don't like any of it haha!

    Here's some more derp

    'snail' racer -

Some quicky chars with focus on flooooww, been doing lots of quick gestures again recently as my characters have been quite stiff. Gonna keep at it and make some nice character lineups -

Just watched the latest design cinema of Feng and these were created from his abstract process, for instance the first enviro was created from a section of a Apache helicopter. So fast to create, opens the mind! I will be doing lots more of these in the coming weeks -

Some studies, will be getting a bust today so lots of life drawing to come -

still killing it man that bladerunner Amsterdam thing is mental and the mood in your sketch enviros are great. What I meant by local values is the base value of a material before any lighting or anything has been taken into consideration. Local value of a white top is much higher than that of a common rocky outcrop. Hope that makes sense of some kind but again it was a nit pick of a crit your characters read well

Gpozzo - thanks a lot mate! Will do
TFsean - cheers mate! Thanks for taking the time to explain. I know now exactly what you mean, and it's often something that I overlook and don't take into consideration. I think some greyscale studies and characters will remedy that quickly

I was going through some old folders and I found some reaaallllyyyy old 3D stuff I thought would be fun to share -

And some new 2D (yey) stuff -

Thought it would be fun to try a cartoony style -

    Some beasts -

Great stuff! I like the bisonish beast in your last post. What helped me improve the sense of life and movement in my characters was studying a lot of animation related stuff. Gesture drawing for animation by Walt Stanchfield is a great book to start with. Then of course you have to do tons and tons of gesture drawings. I usually warm up with an hour of 30sec poses before I start my day using this site:
    http://www.lovecastle.org/draw/
I hope this helps. Keep up the great work!

fantasyartist - thank you so much for the insight! Thanks to you I just got that book! It's sooo good and I'm learning a lot. Thinking in terms of animation realllly helps the flow and personality of the character come out. Really inspiring, thank you for the help! I knew of the gesture website, I did a lot of them in the beginning of this sketchbook, but you can never do enough lol, it's one of those things, if you don't keep at it your stuff can get stale.
xia - thank you, I will!

I just finished and sent off an art book I made for my graduation. It's inspired by the Skillful Huntsman. You can view a flip through preview here -

Now that's out the way, back to improving and getting work! ;d So here's some knight studies -

greymatter - Hey, I used Maya to model a base then I just did tonnes of painting until I was happy with it. I included a few photo elements too. Below I've posted a tiny process image for you, hope it gives a better idea -

I've got my graduation project defence next week Monday, where I have to defend all of my choices against industry concept artists! Both exciting and terrifying at the same time lol. I also got my first freelance gig, and I just randomly found out I'm getting a feature in Digital Arts magazine, apparently my library piece came runner-up for image of the week

uh oh's nudity!! This was a self test sketch of today to see what I could do using only the imagination, turned out okay and shows some good flaws that I can go study -

isokarhu - thanks so much! I don't see the point in only studying one thing or specializing too early, since everything compliments each other and makes your other aspects stronger.
obier - lol I try, but we could always be more productive.. art might be one of the most important things, but it isn't the only thing in life. Bring you're A game, and lets do this!

    chow update, crits always welcomed

I like your way of handling textures and 3D art and adoption into 2D art... do you even use 2.5 D with Zbrush?

andres333 - thanks mate, presentation goes a long way to help sell an idea.
Gpozzo - thank you! I'm trying to get away from 3D a bit now, if I use it too much it can become a crux, and I wouldn't learn as much.
kevin - KEVIN! MATE! haha I'll be following your juicy progress over here too!
JiR - haha! I have used the 2.5D canvas of zbrush buuut personally I feel it's not fluid enough atm. Hard to explain, I prefer the direct brush to canvas feel of photoshop. It's just simple and results come faster with less fiddling around with 3d stuff.
Rotor - uh oh maybe I should throw some dirt around!
Sebastian Gromann - thank you, your too kind! These comments keep me motivated and working hard, I'm happy I can share it with you and perhaps inspire people to do the same.
catukas - ahh cool, I learnt something new! thank you

So A LOT has been going on since my last post. Firstly, I passed my graduation exam, I'm finally done with school!!! Now the real work begins lol! My family all came over, and had a blast. I then went to Disneyland to unwind...on rollercoasters lol. I also had a job interview that went really well, so fingers crossed. Other than that I've been keeping very busy with freelance work that unfortunately I can't show. So here's a few things I managed to get done around hectic life.

Here's a fantasy themed mockup coaster that had to be done in a certain style etc.

A fun sketch from earlier today -
