    Facial study

@M.Calza, thank you. Umm, i was kind of unsure if it was disrupting the flow, i actually love doing those scratches, but none of my favorite artists, or pretty much any artist that does photorealism really seen them do it. I've been slowly gaining confidence here, only in art, but thats enough.

@V3t , thank you. Eh,really, you liked the landscape? i thought it was all sorts of wonky, though i did like the blue/violet scratches on the sea.

@MadGrav, thanks i like playing with colours, i'm more a person who does subtle colouring than straight on powerful. I think it reflects my bad confidence, ha....haha.
I'm not sure if that's a positive thing, but i dont think most my stuff looks muddy.

    @jondawo
, oh i gotta test that! Sounds like actual fun.

Mhm, here's an update, another study, i really liked the colours of the photo, not sure if i was accurate, i feel the photo had darker shades. I think i like it so much i might finish it completely, but im not sure if i like the painting as it is without the veil. It is close to being strong. Mhm,I think this is the truest i've come to express myself completely. As i've said before i abuse the pen tool, hope i didn't overdo it. I wonder if it looks realistic S:

I'd say this latest looks pretty good. The angle of the head is off a bit, but that's not a huge thing. I think you are right, and the values, particularly the shadows of the nose and mouth, are a little too light compared to the photo. As for the colors, I'm not a great resource on that, but they appear to be a little too saturated by comparison, the lips mostly. It's tough to say with some of it, since you removed the veil that was in the reference.

A good attempt, and the start of a pretty nice picture on its own. Keep at it.

@SeraphSword, Agreed on all points. I often get lost in colour play, subdued colour play, but colour play none the less. What do you think of the scratches? I think i overdid it on some areas on the nose, but at the same time i like that messy texture, it hardens and adds attitude to an otherwise very soft painting. Without it, it would look like those, well you can divide a big portion of all art into: Hard and bold paintings, Soft and sometimes see-through/blurry paintings that chase photorealism.

    Hey!
I really like the painterly, unfinished look of your paintings, it is a very appealing style!
I think you need to work more on anatomy and drawing what you actually see and not what you THINK you see. Remember to look mote at your subject than at your drawing and look back and forth pretty much for every stroke you make, measure it against other strokes and angles and so on to get it as close to the original image as possible. I think that if we mixed up you and me we'd become the perfect artist so we should pretty much learn each others stuff. xD

    small face study update.

I have sometime leftover while waiting for my food to finish cooking. I don't think everyone will see this as a big updates, but there's alot that's changed, its just very subtle/under the hood. There's been changes to the nose, it should be more hawklike, like in the photo, as well as changes to neck, jawline, forehead, ear, etc. Oh an the lip shape has been abit plumped up and i went over the upper lip to drag down some of the colour. Preparing for the veeeeeiiiiiiiiillll. Oh, and i darkened the shadows abit, but i dont want to darken them too much, that will mess up the orange tone around the nose and cheek.

*Edit* Whoops, forgot to erase the eye i was doodling, i got a bit bored. Oh and @Anna, yeah i definitely need to work on gestures and anatomy, i used to be Okay at them but i only recently started drawin again from months of...nothing, so i'm very rusty as well as my skills probably degrading due to too many face sketches.
    I'm actually making fondue S:

    Reef

Remaking one of my oldest paintings, and one which, although unfinished and ugly, made me realise alot of things on how to sculpt out shapes. You can probably guess which one it is based on the environments "theme". I kind of just needed to know how the ocean floor looks at night, i've scubadived several times in Mallorca/minorca's reef before so i kind of am familiar in sea flora. I wonder if i need to grade it out a lot further, beyond the algaes and corals. Not sure, but it feels like it'd be good? I'm still taking in everything i learned during my environment studies as well as Jondawo's advice.

I feel like i upload too often, but i need the momentum otherwise i'll just start thinking about how much i suck and never really paint something.

Really like your use of texture, I think you could make a fantastic trademark style out of it! The ocean floor painting comes out a little lighter than your reference photo for me, maybe you could push those darks a little bit more?

    Completed Facial and veil study

Morning' *yawn*, i'm feeling a tad overstuffed from the leftover fondue. Here's this mornings update. I feel bad for updating so often, but, umm, its okay as long as it keeps me from not drawing at all? Once again apologies.

@ClockworkLives, hehe, thank you! It's i'm really liking the way my style its going, it's a compromise between the two styles i love. I hope i can make it work even better, the better i get.
About the ocean painting, definitely, i was thinking along the same lines, i think ill need to brighten it and darken it to make it seem more floury.

Finished the face/veil study. Again, too much into the colours and less into the likeness, but i think the colour usage outweighs the discrepancies in likeness? I have this habit of always trying to get away from doing an accurate study, i feel like likeness is more somethin photography accomplishes better, and painting does colour play and textures better. It's only an opinion. Also, i could've amped the shadows but, i didnt want to mess with the lovely colours

*edit* adding something i did for ArtofAnna. No references-but it doesn count as an original, so no more studies yet.

I'm really fascinated by your paintings. I see how (and I dont mean this in a pejorative sense) simple and rudimentary they are and yet they fully capture the likeness of what you're painting. Have you a method or area of study that helped you to be so efficient? Great work anyways; I'd love to see more.

@turpentine Thank you! heh, well, umm i just try to keep it simple, i don't have the willpower to add crazy details so i always imply it with brushstrokes instead of actually painting it. Saves loads of time. Mhm, i just lay down colours and build upon them, i never actually draw an object when painting, so i guess that's trained my eyes. I mean i would have to see you in process of painting, to tell what differentiates us two besides my obvious use of dissolve and mixer brushes. I wouldn't mind helping you train, like if out timezones match and you livestream or skype, i could help and give comments or something. Imma pm you this.

I like your style. You really should have more self confidence, because it really looks good. The things you will draw in the future will be really great. I'm subbed to this so I can see your progress.

    Nothing really noteworthy

    Good day.

@ArtofAnna, haha yes let's. Quite a hard challenge you gave me though! Here's a try at it. I tried to paint them differently than the way i do. i came out looking like really too soft.

@MadGrav, wow, really? thanks.Umm, thank you.

This painting has been here before, and its the first painting done after my hiatus. Thanks to that the rustiness made it stilted, and i just dont want to work on it, now that i've learning to paint backgrounds.

I want to draw some pencil sketches but my sketchbook has been full for months, and i havent bought any new ones, and i dont even remember where i bought my last one, which had good paper quality. Art supplies in Stockholm?????

a bit more to look at

I felt bad for the lack of new, so here's an update on my remake of my old sea monster painting. I like the mood, feels kind of first person view, with a tad of film. It's still stilted, but i'm learning from this, i have a clear idea for the next painting now-which will be another one with this creature. I know how it looks but i like showing off just the eyes, much more mysterious then. Things are scary when you dont know what they are.

P.s i apologize for the last these 2 crap updates, i'm neglecting stuff in favor of watching.....UK X-factor. I DONT KNOW WHY ITS SO MESMERIZING. I've watched like 6 episodes these pas two days. AND I CANT STOP. HELP.SOS.

    question

I wanted to post several days earlier, but i didnt have anything drawn....and my question was "what should i draw?". So what should i draw? ALso, i bought a sketchbook. Have a 40 minute sketch. I failed at the colours and light, too hard for me to see the subtle variations.

Could be a little darker around the eyes, mouth and left side of her face. The resemblance is great though and you got the colours down pretty well too. Nice work there.

You've read this many times but, your paintings are wonderful. The textures are awesome
One thing, I get the feeling you're getting to the details too fast. There needs to be a smoother transition between the detailed and the simpler parts in the paintings, is what I'm trying to get at.
You're getting nice colors but sometimes they are somewhat off. Try using complementary tones with small accents.
    Excited to see more

Hey Thanks alot for that feedback you gave me. really helpfull, Appreciate it a ton, Im sorry I didnt reply sooner but I have been sick and Im still feeling abit bleh but wow. 3 pages and so much improvement. Your colors are very vivid and beautiful. I agree with Sleep.less that in the last picture you made, u maybe focused abit too much on details first. I love the lip and the eyes, the nostrils seems abit off and you could push the shadows abit more. other than that I really like your style, the deer is just gorgeous and I cant just stop looking at it. I really love how your art looks so nice vivid and painterly. Keep it up. Great art is being made here

really nice paintings! my only concern is there seems to be too much copying from photos and not enough analytical studies from life and imagination. consequentially in your pencil sketches there's no form and you have to rely on that hatching trick on the portraits to indicate depth. study perspective and form (boxes, cylinders, 3d shapes) and your work will improve in leaps in bounds! keep going, nice stuff!

Sorry couldn't keep my update often promise.

X factor uk took my life, I need to get my life. I'm also starting my classes on religion and audio. I hope its going to go well, i'm taking them online since i'm too chicken shit to actually get outcasted again. I'm worried though, my books haven't arrived through mail order yet, and classes already begun today. S:

Here is a sketch i'm doing on my new sketchbook, its an A5, but the sketch is currently taking up 1/4th of the page. I want to stay focused and do tons of leaves and insects, but not ladybugs, those are ugly.

Ps. since i really love my laptop there's an image of the mysterious stranger itself, along with my sketchbook, tablet and some other fun stuff (Sci-fi Convention a few months ago). I didnt want to go there, but my friend Christel convinced me, and me and a group of friends went there and i got some funny photos, so i didnt feel completely lost, and the ordeal proved itself fun in the end. Wall-e was nice to see, though sad to see him alone (love pixar movies). The last one kind of unsettled me, i've become such a scaredy cat, i used to watch horror movies thrice a week, really, i swear. Now i can't even watch a guillermo del toro movie without almost pissing my pants.

@Capt_Surge umm, thank you. It was really dark when i did it, had a power outtage at my home and i had to use my battery quickly. I did actually find a nice program that forces my laptop to not change to the battery hungry dedicated graphic card from the integrated one. Now i can have 6 hours photoshop instead of 2 hours fully charged.

@jondawo, Hiii! haha, yeah, def had trouble spotting the colours, like, extremely so, it's not really a vibrant photo so i took it as a challenge.

@Ninaren, ah, thank you. haha, you know what? it wasnt even supposed to be a deer in the beginning, it was a bear, then an otter, and finally a deer. I tried to add some more variances around the neck B:

yeah, haha, it really turned out very muted in terms of shadows, i noticed it and really hated it for that. But i'm glad i challenged myself with that kind of subdued lighting, the photo itself was hard to read.

@Sleep.less, umm,well,actually-i only hear this here on conceptart tbh. Everyone here is alot kinder than people usually are to me at home or my old school. But it's really my fault, i alienated everyone and never really spoke eloquently, so people grew to dislike me.I just couldn't, and still can't, say things that reflect the intention i mean. I just sounded bitchy when i wanted to help, and hurtful when i wanted to be kind.

I can definitely see that, i have this thing where i grow quickly bored with painting so i rush the details out to finish it? Does that make sense? I'll def work on it, and imma pm you, i really want to thank you for the things you say, even if it was nothing special, the phrasing that made it special to me.

@Eightball, Thank you. Umm, im confused i thought i was doing studies. What am i doing wrong? i'll try to fix it. What's the difference between those analytical studies and what i've been doing.

Hmm, i can see what you mean. But it's always been my conscious choice not to shade darkly, and i think you are right, i think its affected the way i paint sometimes at certain angles, etc. But it really is conscious, i dislike strong contrast in my own pencils, it looses it's wistful delicacy, even if it gains expression. And my strength has always been the conscious sacrifice of expression for sensibility. I'll try and see if i can shade abit darker to bring forth more depth while at the same time keeping the mostly white delicacy that almost breaks with the wind. So thank you (:

What Eightball means with analytical studies is actively paying attention to forms, construction and values when doing your studies.
That means always constructing the head using linework when doing portrait studies. Setting up the horizon line and paying attention to perspective when you're doing landscapes (and figure drawing too really).
On top of that, it means doing studies for a particular reason that you're very clear about. For example. Rather than saying "I want to do a portrait study", think
"what do I have trouble with when im drawing heads?"
    is it the eyes?
oh it is? (just for this example )
Ok, I'm going to practice drawing eyes from reference until I get better at them.
I'm also going to draw them from imagination afterwards so that I'll remember how to draw them next time.

Look at some tutorials or anatomy books as reference so that you'll understand the form of the eye when you're drawing it.

Break forms up into the basics (cubes, cylinders) when you run into trouble.

Look at some websites like http://ctrlpaint.com/library/ and think about what you want to study and in what order.

What you're talking about here is stylistic choices. Having your own style is fine and great, but it means very little if you don't have the fundamentals of drawing and painting to build upon. Think of it like a nice paintjob on a car, but the car itself is poorly built and lacks working parts. It'll look nice at first glance but once the car needs to drive and do it's job, so to speak, it falls apart. Build a car that runs great first. Add the paint later (or along the way).

I don't mean any of this to come off as demeaning, I'm just trying to explain it in a clear way. I hope it helps a little.

um, just a painting sketch thing

I kind of am in a rush here, kind of getting late on my theology/religion assignment (not really, but i like to stay atleast 2 days ahead of schedule) so i don't think ill get time to do any studies until, like, the weekend.

I'm painting this to take of some stress, because i was so upset at myself for the previous pencil...i didnt like that i recognised the jaw structure as my own. It's something i hate, using own features in art, and i always try to not do it, I'm pleasingly successful, most of the time...but not that time.
i'm testing limiting my colour choices. I think it will help me focus more, maybe?Uh, and umm, is it to vivid? maybe i should add some variance to the skin tone...but that would defeat the purpose.

Hmm, the color turned a bit more yellow, and slightly less pink/orange on the skintone. I'll fix that on the next update's .jpeg.

@Jondawo, oh,wow. That makes me actually understand the Eightball put. I thought he meant something else, and kind of re-reading it...i came across like defensive? It wasnt my intention at all. I really need to take some classes on articulation, or something. I even re-read that thing like thirteen times before posting it. No,no,no, you didn't come across as demeaning at all. I'm pretty much a shoddy car in my art, and every criticism is really helpful, it makes me less accepting of errors i know i do. I much appreciate it. Umm, thank you.

Hi I peeked through your sketchbook and I was pleasantly surprised by your sketches! For example post #61 even through the elements are not exactly the same as the reference, you emphasized the colors in some spots and it almost makes it look better than the photo On your latest post, I'm not sure if I like the yellowish palette but I really love how you accentuated the skin with highlights! Can't wait to see more

    Update

@Demeter_luna , Hehe, thank you! I do,umm, always try to bring something else than complete likeness when i draw stuff that isnt my own. I feel that mood and expression is something i appreciate more,so i always focus on that instead of likeness or 100% accuracy.
I agree that the palette didnt work, too much saturated yellow and orange, and not enough variances in hues. It's my fault for trying to use very few colours. The previous pic turned out abit more yellow compared to how it looked on photoshop, but it was a really small discrepancy, still that discrepancy caused abit of the balance to be chucked out. For this new update, i used mac Previews adjustment to get the overall colours closer to the truth.

Oh,umm, on other news, here's another update on this thing. I't quite possible the most bereft thing i've done. I'm going to continue working on it, or whatever other work i feel for a while, need to destress from having to study, specially on a platform (internet) i'm not used to. Hmm,also, i added some sparkles to make the colour scheme more interesting, i realised to late (when i was done with half of them) that i still was working on Background layer. I,really, really, really need to work on using more than the first layer.

P.S. It takes ages to log int to conceptart now, it's so slow. I'm looking forward to when they finish the site update!

    Vibrancy

Conceptart looks so different now. Feels weird.

@ninaren, im not sure ill work on the guy anymore, just dont feel like it. I'm still bothered by it.Thank you for the nice comments though, very much appreciated.Wall-E is amazing,i just love the character dynamics. It's also very heartwarming.

Here's a few stuff im working on, still busy with my online theology/religion classes. I'm not liking how the face is rougher and how the hair looks like old lara craft (only realised it just now).I do like the colours and wanted to do something more colourful and vibrant than last time (also cooler). Not sure where the pose is going.
Also a lazy still life of Adele, except it doesnt look anything like her. Oh and didnt even bother to texturise her

hey there! So, my 2 cents would be to work on drawing, mainly spacing and placing of things. That would solve most of your problems that are occurring. also, doing value studies would help a ton too. just work in black and white. that's it. do that for a month consistently and you'll have improved a thousand times over. Keep it up! I like the effort, keep 'em coming!
