    Nate Hallinan's (inNate) Sketchbook

2011/09/08 - Alright, it's time for me to stop procrastinating and start this sketchbook. I've never made one before but I've wanted to for the longest time. I need to stop being lazy, stop making excuses and get better.

I'm practicing some character stuff because I feel like that's something my portfolio is really lacking right now.

    Thanks xbert!

Yeah, I suppose I could show some of those things. I must not be too familiar with the procedures in the sketchbook forum. I thought I was just suppose to show my most recent a relevant pieces of work, practice, and such.

    Sketches from this morning...

There's something meditative about drawing 'old-man' wrinkles.

So this is what I've been working for the first half of this month. I feel like I need more characters in my portfolio and I thought it would be fun to do my own interpretation of a Smurf. This is definitely influenced by Michael Kutsche's recent work. (So this is a style study) He's been producing some amazing concepts lately and it has inspired me to push my realism and creativity. I'm definitely not at his level but he provides an amazing quality to aspire to.

Concept - What if Smurfs were real?

The Smurf is actually the result of a symbiotic relationship between two organisms. We believe that Smurfs put their 'embryos' in the button of a developing mushroom. From a distance, Smurfs seem like they are wearing a hat and pants but as you can see this is a fallacy. The fungus provides camouflage and protective epidermal layers for the creature, while the creature provides nutrients and mobility for the spreading of spores.

Smurfs are believed to be a hunter gatherer society. As you can see, this little guy is returning from a successful venture. It is generally difficult to spot a Smurf; they are very apprehensive and cunning. Sadly though, it is rumored that they are hunted for their medicinal properties. It's hard to determine but it is thought that there are not many colonies of Smurf left.

    Thanks guys!

Got a little tired of doing real human studies so I did some character studies of Konk from Pirates of Dark Water. He might be a fun character to paint.

I haven't done any screenshot practice before so I thought I would try some today. This is a screenshot from 5th element. I chose an image of Cornelius' face because I'm still focused on practicing characters. You can never do too many faces. (Well you can, but I haven't)

I am noticing that I really have work on subtle vertical angles. (I seem to angle them too much.) So here's the initial sketch for today's warm up plus all the errors I could pick out to fix tomorrow.

Man, Ive been horrible with my studies. I'll get back to the 5th element study soon. I did a quick 2 hour study of a squirrel money today. (Gearing up for my next painting.)

Definitely a lot of mistakes but I'm happy with the results keeping it down to 2 hours and refraining from using the color picker.

Working on my speed again so I only gave myself an hour. (No color picker) I feel like there's some improvement on color and value perception. Though on this image and the last I can tell I'm painting images darker than they really are.

1 hour study of a parrot image.

Love the old guy drawings and the smurf! The monkey's nice too, but I think you've overemphasized the texture to the point of losing the form a little. The parrot's much better on that front.

Wow, I really love your combos of photorealism/cartoons. The smurf in particular is awesome... you see a lot of paintings of "real" cartoon characters, but the concept on this one puts it in a different league altogether. Thanks so much for sharing this!

Someone should bitch slap me in the face. I'm just not doing as many studies as I should. Well I had some time today so here are some clothed male figures. (Celebs) Wes Burt suggested using paparazzi images as reference at the MB Workshop and it's truly a no-brainer awesome resource. Don't know why I didn't try it before. I'm definitely going to more this way and work on speeding up my characters.
