Scott M Fischer- New art 2011

Woah has it really been over a year since my last post at CA!!

Much has happened, but first I want to thank so many of y'all for coming out to vote in 2009 to get my children's book 'JUMP!' into a million Cheerios cereal boxes! It was a crazy feat and I think you can even still find it on the shelf out there!

Now on to some art! This is probably my favorite fantasy painting of the last year. It is a magic card and all digital. Big nod to Hokusai on this for sure!

Then we got into some novel covers. I think this one got the most attention. It is a hybrid piece on watercolor paper for the Wheel of Time series. I have been getting into water media lately and this has watercolor and acryla gouache on it.

This is a fun one in a series for TOR called Above His Proper Station. It is all digital with real world textures applied.

This is the third in a series for Penguin. The novel is called Kill Box by Anne Aguirre.

This isn't really a cover, but it was my contribution to the STARWARS: Visions book. Always wanted to paint a female Stormtrooper! This is an oil hybrid on canvas.

I did some concepting for the TRON game. Man this was a blast to work on! And the team up in Canada were nothing short of fantastic!

I love concepting and would like to make more time for it. In fact if anyone is looking for a hired gun in late fall, feel free to give me a shout. There might be a window.

If you know my prior concept art it is usually a lot looser, but for Tron I wanted to up the fidelity on the finishes.

The highlight for me was redesigning the main Player character. Sadly we didn't have enough time before the street date to get him in the game.

I enjoyed the thumbnail stage. They pretty much let me go crazy.

So if you know my stuff you know I wear many different hats. One of the hats I LOVE to wear is doing art for little kids. (And big little kids, like me!)

My latest children's book just came out last week. Called Lottie Paris Lives Here (written by Angela Johnson) This book was pure joy to work on. No digital in this one. All acryla gouache applied with anything I could get my hands on. Brayers, Brushes, Stamps, Linocut, foamies, sandpaper, fabric- you name it. I went nuts and risked more than I ever have artistically. But I hoped the slick colored line I put on top of everything would pull it all together!
    [IMG][/IMG]

So stylistically this got me thinking about trying this look on something a little older. So I experimented! (Again all traditional.)

Did a couple things for Charity auctions! (I was a Skaterat in the 80's!)

Had some fun teaching at the Illustration Master Class! And can't wait to do so again next year. (Thanks to those of you who attend!) Here was an experiment I did with a thin oil wash technique. Must play more with this!

Finally I had another book just come out for the Middle Reader genre (Chapter book) It is a series called 'Scary School', written by Derek the Ghost (who is actually Derek Kent) What a total riot to work on! Don't know that I have ever had more fun on a book. Each has a color cover and 50+ ball point pen drawings inside!

And with that I will give your peepers a rest! Hope you guys dig!

I like your watercolors, in spite of the fact that I don't like watercolor, so you must be doing something right. And I love all things Tron.

    Scott Mmmmmmmm Fischer. My favorite.

Your magic cards and novel covers are amazing as usual. But your concepting work and children's book style are really great as well. Such diversity! I love how you applied the Lottie Paris style to the other experiments. Especially SprocketPainting.

Thanks guys! If any one is interested in hearing more about the children's book technique I used above, if you can still get it, I did a How-to article for International Artist magazine in their Aug issue.

    Wow. I love your stuff.

    Nice character sheets.
All the artwork I've seen on CA makes Tron look like it was a fun project for artists.

But the most badass piece is the first painting with the female water character. Absolutely gorgeous. And I like the Hokusai nod.

Thanks guys, it is a funny thing about wearing so many artistic hats. Can be a blessing and a curse.

A blessing because things stay fresh and I am always growing. After a sting doing Kidsbook work, I can't wait to get back to some grown up art. And I stay pretty busy because when one thing is a little quiet, another is usually happening.

A curse in that I am easily distracted by new shiny objects. (This goes beyond art, but the objects are usually rusty and pitted, old cars, guitars, bicycles, you name it!) I am a tinkerer through and through.

So in the spirit of more hats on the hat rack. Here is a more animation style thing I have been playing with.

And here is some digi colored light pencil concept stuff.

And here is an oil hybrid piece on canvas for the EARTH show at the Society of Illustrators.

Here are 9 monsters in underpants

And here is a pooping bunny.

Awesome work. As a Star Wars geek, I think the female trooper (STILF?) is great. Really great range of styles / media too.

hey Scott, it's so awesome to see such a diverse range of work from you, all of it is beautiful. It was particularly nice to see your tron designs come in day by day and get inspired by your take on the characters! That was a highlight for me on the project.
