Spartan Camp #196 - 50 gestures + Optional "Long Foreshortened Study

Spartan Camp #196 - 50 gestures + Optional "Long Foreshortened Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 11th of September.

    - The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

    - In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Long Foreshortened Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

We've done foreshortened gestures before so most of you will probably be familiar with this. A certain distortion takes place because an object is angled towards the viewer. When drawing, this distortion can be used to create a feeling of depth. Like an optical illusion.

For this weeks optional study, find a good reference image of a human body in a foreshortened pose. You do not have to spend hours, just spend enough time to get a good grasp of this particular pose.
Stock or modelling photography, as well as sports pictures should provide good sources of reference.

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Think I'll be doing digital gestures for a while. Scanning problems...

The Law of Fives states simply that: All things happen in fives, or are divisible by or are multiples of five, or are somehow directly or indirectly appropriate to 5

Yeah, this whole forum has died since school started.

I did everything, but I'm going to have to miss the deadline. Just way too tired to stay up and scan tonight.

Edit: By the way, you guys rock. I hope I can learn to draw as well as what I see here.

Hi people... I'm late and I didn't finish anything. This week will be busy too, packing, cleaning, moving, computer party... But I try to draw something after I moved in, the boxes will disappear at some point.

Anthis: Nice stuff as usual but you still draw assymmetrical eyes now and then.

samming: I like the animals. The big figure has a nice shape I guess but the shading is extremely soft and lacks contrast.

    My unfinished stuff:
I don't know if it's my state or the difficulty of this figure, probably both, I worked on it hours and it just kept staying messy, but I won't give up so easily, just I couldn't focus on drawing this week. I wished to do it as the optional. Photo referenced, including the colors

    Some very quick cats.

That's all. But I wished to show something moderately decent from my inactive week so here's my attempt to paint a cute skull of the Hyrtl collection:

So sorry for the tardiness. I fell way behind on my scans, and I tried to make up for it all tonight. Compromise: Everything is sideways =P. If people don't like it, bug me and I'll rotate it all.

Every time I try to draw the full figure, I realize just how much more I have to learn. This time, I tried to practice cross hatching too, which was a lot of fun.

samming; Nice animals! I like the crocodiles/alligators for their solid form. They're bold and 'confident' drawings. The ones where you added some cross-hatching for values are great too. It's clear you're using lines for definition and values to indicate the shape and form. Some good foreshortened sketches too!

Strato; Yup, was to be expected I guess!

ShiNIN; True enough. Can't seem to get rid of that habit.
Despite what you call 'messiness', I think that is a very successful study. I'm not sure about your workflow, but I got the feeling its technical difficulties you're struggling with. You've done good on the figure, proportions, foreshortening, even the values and colouring (though the chest area is somewhat contrast heavy). It's not clean and neat, but a solid study. What do you spend most of your time on?

Strato; I'll be straight up with you: I think the last study shows you surely can draw good figures if you put your mind to it. Very tough pose, but you pulled it off really well. To some extent, I think the quick poses are a mixed bag. You use a good combination of those flow lines (trough the spine, for instance) and round shapes as a starting sketch. But careful, don't be too loose on those. Even though its just the sketch, its still your foundation. Don't be too hasty on those!

But I did a much better study the week before I think - in a fragment of the time I've spent on this. I know, it's not the easiest gesture, the colors are crazy and so and I wanted to draw the face as well but still, the long struggling process with a messy result annoys me Struggling: I don't even know what I do, I feel like a crappy copy machine and I don't have fun either.
The girl has an uneven tan, she must sunbath in a bikini but I messed up the values around the chest area anyway, it's true. The light is very bright, it's too easy to confuse me with my tiny skills regarding lighting.
I spent similar time on everything (I redrawed the body parts quite a few times) except the face, I worked on it much and still, she isn't similar to the reference. A beautiful girl is always a trap: I want to draw her well (besides, I expect much from myself if it's a face... my favourite topic and I'm most experienced in it) and I will fail. Even if she will be a nice girl, she won't be HER.
But I'm always a bit pleased if I draw at least. Unlike in the last several days. Moving into my first very own home required a lot of time... But it will be nice and inspiring. I even have light for still lifes!
