I love Illustrator! I just don't love the learning curve - but am getting there.


This is a companion piece to a project I am doing for Schoolism - Stephen Silver's Character Design class. - Absolutely loving the class, falling behind a little though thanks to so much work on my plate, however I see an end in sight and a definite improvement. Can't wait to do more pieces in Illustrator, the end result is so different than Photoshop.

Now for something really fun! I had the honour of doing a sudden last minute job for Two Creature Studios to design some bugs for their newest game. They have just released these images on their homepage so I can do the same here!

These were a lot, lot of fun and I would love to do more work like this. I have seen the Bee animated and it is hilarious.

The entire lineup. All finished, finito, done! I have learnt a lot since I started this project - in fact so much so, I was not happy with the very first muppet I drew (Floyd) and he didn't make this final image because I feel my skills have grown since I started this project.

On to the next, and even more epic, GoT project!

Oh wow, once again it has been ages since I have posted here. However, in that time I have been working on personal and professional projects, learning illustrator in more depth, extra hours at day job and rather excitingly, have started to learn 3d modelling (as of today!). Can't hurt to have another feather in the cap... and it is really really good fun (so far).

For now, just a few sketches to show that I am still working hard. Promise.

Thought I would post up my “before” and “after” from my recent class in Character Design with Stephen Silver. I really did learn tons that I am trying to implement into my daily pipeline. We started the class by drawing a character to a guideline, and then finished the class by redrawing the character using the new techniques we had (hopefully!) learnt. I had really liked my “Walter” on entering the class but coming back to him – oh my, did I see the difference! Thought it might be fun to share lovely Walter. It should hopefully be obvious that the new version is on the left…

Hi Marian - the Stephen Silver class was brill, learnt a lot even though I was rather against the clock and couldn't immerse myself as much as I wanted. I would really recommend it! Currently saving the pennies for the next class!

Second pic, turnaround of Fraser for my game project. Learnt a lot with this one (and thanks again to Stephen Silver for making me realise that turnarounds are hard, not impossible). I think lucky Fraser here is going to be my first attempt at modelling a character in 3d.... will see how confident I feel!

I have been really naughty and not really explored environments yet - so I threw this together today just to see where I am - need a lot of practice! Today's task -to draw more environments from reference and I also plan on doing some isometrics this week too. Exciting times!

Something slightly different – been playing around with creating basic isometric assets. These are for Sylvia’s house in Chicken Joust. If I had my way, I would have plants everywhere. I also have a predisposition towards purple things, obviously. Don’t hate on the purple! These were great and I hope to do more shortly.

Quite excited, I am planning on booking in to the self-paced Schoolism Course in Colour and Light today. Time to start exploring more fundamentals. I love, love, love working in colour and have wanted to learn more about lighting for a long time. Decided to bite the bullet and pick up the course although I will be eating nothing but noodles for a month...

Seriously. I need more hours in the day. It’s getting silly now.

I really feel for this poor lady, everything seems to go wrong for her. Hence why I have drawn her slightly drawn and red-faced.

Currently on book 4 – endlessly torn between putting it down and savoring everything that is happening, and desperately reading on to find out what happens.

Trying out a new technique – very pleased with how this little guy turned out. I have drawn several “orchid dragons” in the past and thought it was time to do a little update for a personal piece. I do think this little one needs some friends soon though!

Learnt a lot with this one – and also realised I don’t know much about sub-surface scattering. Add that to the list….
