Hey everyone! I've been checking out this site for a long time - have made the occasional post too. I'm gonna try and keep a sketchbook here. I find that your average deviantART user has more appreciation for the finished, polished stuff than pencil drawings. And NOBODY checks out my sketch blog! So I'll set up camp right here and see how it goes. I love crits and comments so feel free. Thanks for looking.

hey Mike, great stuff! im a big fan of sketches, people who cant appreciate the raw ideas, are the ones who spend 4 hours rendering a shoelace. i love the raw sketches! anyways, great stuff man!

Here are a bunch of pages from a little sketchbook of mine. I love sketching with marker. It's a good challenge to try and put down every line in the right spot on the first try. It's nearly impossible to do (for me at least). But its wicked practice.

Hell yeah! I've dug your work on dA for a good few years, but its even better to see your pencil work! Totally out'a sight man! I really admire your pencil rendering, but those pen sketches show extreme confidence! I especially love the bearded robocop~

I like how in each update, its pretty animated and it tells stories, even if they are a bunch of random sketches. (: It really makes the sketchbook alive so to speak. Your sketches can appear realistic without losing the strong emotion it with held. That's great (: looking forward for more updates

There. I thought I'd show you the prerequisite life drawings early so I can get back to posting drawings of orks and zombies.

I'm not the best at life drawing, and my speed on these was pretty bad. Any half-decent animation student could pull these off and better in a fraction of the time. I need more practice - it's just hard to find naked people sometimes!

No time to show you anything new. Been busy working on NDA stuff. Here's an older batch of marker drawings. I know, I know. Every artist has to try markers after seeing Doug Chiang's work for the first time.

Wuh-oh, dreaded deadlines... at least there's plenty of scans in here already that i can feast on until you return! Love all the life drawings on the posts above, and these recent creatures remind me a bit of of old EC ghouls, mainly Graham Ingles' abominations. Great stuff!

Thanks BGrizzMayne! Here are a few tips for sketching monsters and junk out of your head (thought there are better artists here than me to learn from). Start really fast and light. You don't even need an idea of what your monster will look like at this point. Use the side of your pencil and make quick, light marks. Scribble in the shapes, erase what you don't like or just keep going. You should end up with a fuzzy cloud of a drawing. Just like watching real clouds you'll be able to pick out shapes and forms that you like.

Slow down a little. Press a little harder, but keep using the side of the pencil. Resist the urge to use the point until you're sure you have everything where you want it. Darken up shadowy areas and erase out highlights if you have to.

Now slow down a lot. Start using the tip of the pencil. Pick certain areas to focus on and render them out. Only render the parts that interest you. Leave others loose and unfinished. I usually render faces, eyes, hands, weapons... Always think about soft and hard edges. If the form you're drawing is rounded, then the transition from light to dark will be soft. If there is a sharp change in direction on the form, the transition from light to dark will be hard. Draw really slow (speed comes with time) and concentrate on where the light and shadows fall. This kind of stuff is hard to explain. Hope that helped a little!

how would u recommend practicing? ive been studying anatomy to try and get a solid grasp on how muscles come together before i try to imagine my own creature-muscle schemes but maybe this isnt the best way to go?

@ Hyenathatdraws: Thanks! Glad you're liking it! But when it comes to orcs/orks, all I'm trying to do is rip off the master: Paul Bonner.

@BillTheBro: Never been called a gawd before! How do I recommend practicing? Man, that's a tough question. First of all, I'm 34 years old. If you're much younger than me, or relatively new to art then don't sweat it. I sucked ass when I was younger. The trick is to enjoy what you're doing and not worry too much about your skill level. You have to get through, maybe, 10,000 shitty drawings before you get to any good ones. There is no way to speed up the process. When I'm drawing something, its easy to get frustrated- but I fight against that feeling. No matter how good you get at art, there's always people much better. Don't rush to get there. Take your time and enjoy where you are right now. When you're having fun drawing something it shows. People can tell. It doesn't matter that you're not the best in the world. People respond well to enthusiasm. This is a drunk post, so forgive me if I'm not making any sense.

As for studying anatomy -yes, do that. Absolutely. But when I make up monsters, I don't just rely on human anatomy. Usually it involves mixing in some animal DNA with human. For the fishmen page I just drew, I googled 'fish skull' real quick to get a general idea of the form. I don't think I'm making enough sense. Ask me again when I've sobered up.
