    CCS' Berserk Sketchbook

Alright, so it's finally time to start one of these things. I'll be posting most of my digital work I do for practice in this section. To start off though I'll post some stuff I've already done so you can get a sense of my work. A lot of it (and I mean a lot) is Berserk fanart, hence the title of the sketchbook. BTW that series is getting a movie, which you should check out the site for: http://www.berserkfilm.com/

Thanks for looking and be as harsh as you want with critiques. If I want to improve I need the input.

Here's a poster I made based on what I think the final volume of Berserk might be like. Following that are other fan work and practice images I've done.

Hey there, pretty good start to your sketchbook - keep up the posting!
I think it would be benefitial to really focus on the proportions since on a few of your poses they seem to be off (mostly the feet size and leg / torso ratio) but all in all not so bad. The majority of your linework is quite good though some gestures would be good to see - to train your hand to draw smoother flowing lines all the time.

Lastly it would be helpful to know what direction you are aiming for with your art ( just hobby, illustrator, concept artist, animator etc) in order to tailor crits more to you rather than just general errors.

    Keep it up!

Thanks for the feedback! I'll have to make sure I keep the legs the right proportion in the future. I know they're half of the body, but I don't keep as careful track of the lengths of the sections above and below the knee.

At the moment I'm pretty sure I want to be an animator. I'm going to be working on an animation project in the Fall to see if I can really see myself doing that. I also want to do something with comics at some point as they're my first love, but that might be a side thing.

Anyway here's more Milt Kahl studies.

I still exist! This time another painting of Bayaz from Joe Abercrombie's works, and a piece of fanart for Kvothe from "The Name of the Wind". I'll try to scan some of my sketchbook drawings soon.

GUUTSSS!y effort on your fan arts dude.

your drawing is a lot stronger than your painting, i'm in a similar position and found this site really helpful http://www.ctrlpaint.com/.
    on a more specific note-
in your latest piece of the guy in the street, the figure and the background dont fit together very well.
it would look nicer if either the background was done with lines or the figure was rendered without lines.

your Disney studies are also pretty good but i think you could get even more out of them if you drew the gesture and base form for each pose.
here are a couple of links that you may already have - rads howtos and john ks curriculum.

    keep working hard

Thanks dude. I'm taking a painting course this semester so hopefully those will get better. I totally see the style clash between Kvothe and the background. Animation tends to do that but in a still image I can see how it looks off.

Thanks for the links. I've heard of John K but I hadn't heard of rads howtos before.

Haven't updated in a while, but still sketching regularly. Here's some assorted digital stuff. The guy in the hood is a Steel Inquisitor from Brandon Sanderson's great series "Mistborn".

You've got a very good understanding of Light and Color and I really like your Character studies. Keep moving on in rendering, it's essential.

Try a few life drawing classes and get imaginary realism by james gurney that will help you tenfold other then that your color and value is impressive just work on the composition a little bit more

Thanks for the feedback! I have James Gurney's book on Color and Light, and it's great. I'll see about getting his other one. Guy knows how to present information.

Here's some more sketches from different inspiring references. Trying to keep it loose and fun.

Also here's a video of me flipping through my traditional sketchbook. Mostly life drawing. Sorry for the weird angle.

Some more stuff. The girl with red hair's pose is from imagination, so I'd appreciate feedback on the pose. Other stuff is referenced from a variety of places. The painting of the guy's face is a painterly approach to a character design I'm animating.

Thanks for the comment! Nice to see another person who wants to go into animation, liking the Kahl stuff. Keep doing poses from imagination, I think they'll help you learn more than the ones from observation will. doing stuff from your head is the only way to apply what you've learned. Try to give your poses some kind of specific action. Your girl looks like doing a twisting pose with a pole, but I can't tell exactly what she's supposed to be doing.

Here's some more sketches. The ones on the top right in the second page is from imagination. It's easy to see I haven't gotten that stuff down yet. Rest is from reference.

Color sketch from a dream I had last night. Alien goo/light stuff takes over the planet or something. People here are tying to get to the surface by taking an elevator, but it won't open. Then the goo catches up!

Also there's some sketches of characters from Downton Abbey, which is a great show.

Some more stuff. The figure progression on the bottom row of the first image is from imagination. The one above it is from a gif made by a Japanese artist.
