    brave like a bear

    Hello everyone
I've been lurking around here for a while and am finally getting around to starting a sketchbook!
I'm a 19 year old fine art student; just finished my foundation year and will be studying Fine Art: Painting at the University of Brighton for the next three years, although this is all fairly traditional i spend most of my free time practicing digital painting, so here is a place for my studies and sketches to go!
To start here are some environment speed paintings i've done recently and a self portrait i did from observation last night, my first real attempt at portraiture but it was fun!
    Any criticisms are much appriciated

Love the environmental pics, especially the lower right brownish one. Good sense of depth!
Nice to see there's some English people active on here too. (my brother lives in Brighton. Great town if you like good pubs and Metal)

lovely landscape.. for improvements i would say when painting, start off using a large brush, rather than a small one.. can see its ur way of painting. Using a smaller brush is usually for detail and sharpness, u have that going for all over ur piece which has no kind of focus in it. So larger first then small, but dont smother the small all over the larger marks, use it sparingly.

But other than that ur on the right tracks mate! keep it up.

    todays update!
15 minute environment, mainly working on values and lighting
also worked a little more onto the previous environment; at the moment i'm not happy with the closest bridge, but have added a rough sketch of the creature + figures.
plan on doing some more portrait or figurative studies tommorow.

I really love your landscapes. They've got some nice feeling of texture to them. The portraits are looking great too. Keep it up!

I really enjoy your use of color, and it seems like your 'patchy' application of said color is something you do in both traditional and digital mediums, a lovely style. I love all the colors you managed to work into the cat piece with it all holding together cohesively.

    thanks for the comments guys
finally got a new monitor which i can paint on; so much nicer than painting on my 13" laptop screen haha

    anyway, recent work;
first was just a quick environment sketch, trying to make something hostile looking, might even take it further and add a few dragons or something!
next is just two photostudies i did yesterday, have had a pretty bad allergic reaction to something so i havent been overly productive

just a few environment speeds so far, likely to refine the last one a bit more, but hope you like and criticism is appreciated

Hey man, great work in here, especially the enviro's.
It seems like there is something up with the proportions on the portraits for me but they're probably fine, could just be the colours drawing your attention to specific areas, but you've got a great sense of lighting and atmosphere in your paintings.
How are feeling about the course at Brighton? I was thinking of applying there myself next year,
It seems like a good place to go for traditional and even concept, I think Milo Hartnoll studies there, his work is amazing, but yeah keep going!
