We all know that incest is wrong because if they have kids, those kids could come out with problems.
But what if the incestuous couple are gay or lesbian? Is that still wrong? there aren't going to be any children, so the whole 'deformed kids' argument will cease to be a problem. The only reason I'm asking is because a friend and I were having a disagreement and I wanted some other opinions because neither of our arguments were going anywhere, so I came to the only place I know where I was going to get a large range of answers.

So, is gay / lesbian incest bad?
personally, I think that if there aren't any victims, then people can do what they want, as long as they don't tell me about it. what do you think? try to put aside the "YUCK!" part of your brain.

But seriously, we were listening to a podcast that brought up the question:
"If you had a super hot stepsister, who was dropping hints all over the place, would it be wrong to 'tap dat'?". Everyone in the podcast answered:
"hell yeah I'd tap dat!". From this, a new question was brought up, (the one about gay incest), my friend couldn't close off the "DUDE, GROSS!" part of his mind, so the argument stopped there.

It's interesting that you went to gay/lesbian incest, rather than the advent of birth control or medical procedures (like a vasectomy) that would prevent pregnancy in hetero couples, too. We tore this issue apart in a couple of ethics classes. Ethically speaking, no harm, no foul.

As to the 'yuck' part of your brain, there have been studies that show children raised together (who are unrelated), are unlikely to develop romantic relationships with each other. One study claimed that being raised together changes brain wiring (that's the technical term) to prevent incest-related birth defects and such and such. Of course, the study couldn't possibly account for societal pressure to not engage in such relationships, but whatev.

I'll see if I can track down one of the studies, if anyone is interested.

However, the theory they were studying was based on the Westermarck Effect, which basically says being raised together during formative years gives a natural disgust towards later sexual relationships.

As erinc says, you'd be much, much less likely to have a strong, loving relationship with a brother or sister, whether you're having sex or not, it just wouldn't work. Different relations I'm not sure though. Step siblings you could probably get away with because you're not related by blood, and possibly cousins.

You have a decent point there, but we can't say that it doesn't happen, because I seen, enjoyed and finished enjoying footage of the lesbian twin nature.

I agree. I wouldn't indulge in incest myself, probably for the precisely the reasons you give below. But neither do I consider it any of my business what other people do, as long as they do no harm, thus I am quite neutral about the issue.

I remember having read this same thing myself, and it makes some sense. If memory serves, several studies indicated that nature wires us not to be incestuous, but interestingly enough, also not to be too "out-cestuous." Thus the yuck factor sets in at the thought of sexual relations with people very closely related, but also with other species, or indeed to some extent with people very remotely related.

The wrong part would be that the emotional attachments and sexual attraction got somehow all mixed up - to put it in simple terms.

If someone doesn't mind heavy psych health bills later in life.....

Or look at it this way, sexual part ends, relationship between sibilings (possibly in the family) stays strained.... things get worse later in life.

Keeping it clean results in fewer potential damages down the road, as life can be a long time, how we feel about things can change, things can come out in public, and participants stigmatized and ostracized. Few orgasms usually aren't worth the mess they could create in this situation.

I cant remember the name of the movie, I watched it long ago as a kid. It was about two siblings stranded on an island by themselves (well with an old man I think but he died?) and as they grew up, they ended up being attracted to one another and had a baby.

I think my initial reaction was wtf, but the movie normalized it, it wasn't used as some sort of shock value, it was played just like any two regular people of the opposite sex would naturally be attracted to one another.

Since seeing it, no I don't think the act is wrong. Biologically and situationally it's plausible. Only our society/culture deems it wrong, but that's just moral scrutiny.

I think you're talking about "The Blue Lagoon" and they weren't sibling really. At least in the older version they were cousins and in the sequel they aren't related at all.

But personally I don't have any proper siblings so I'm not sure if my judgement is real but I have this idgaf, do what you want view on it.

And I was wondering. The law prohibits siblings from getting married. But what if one of the siblings is adopted? In the eye of the law he/she is treated the same as a biological child, adoptive parents are even written on the birth certificate and all. Would they still not be allowed to get married?
