Laptop requirement

I had some questions for current TAD students about their computer usage.

I know that the TAD equipment requirements recommend getting a laptop computer. How useful do you guys find the mobility of such a device and do you think it out-weighs the cost and power advantages of going with a desktop machine configuration? Do you bring it to class/studio with you on a regular basis? Do you work on it frequently away from home? Is a laptop more useful for students attending PODs than those doing online-only classes?

I'm planning to order a computer this week, which is why I'm curious.

Hey Gntlemanartist, if you're going to be an online student, like myself, it wouldn't really matter if you are working from a desktop or a laptop. I myself prefer working on my desktop at home, which is connected to a bigger screen.
However, if you are planning on going to one of the PODs, I'm positive a Laptop is what you should go for, as the mobility would be of great help and facilitate your work (You will probably want to work at the POD as much as at home).

i'm not at tad, but i start this fall
i'm working online since i'm in australia, i'm using a laptop because you have the option of taking it places, outside - plein air painting, to life drawing for figure painting and its just mobil, its good to have the option
i have it with an extra monitor for reference too, which is very very useful

Get the nicest one you can afford with the following things to keep in mind.

Just a heads up that Tablet PC's are toys at best right now. You should look at laptops with above average processing power, at least 4 gigs ram, high resolution monitors with good color (compare the screens with your eyes and look for sharp color and value contrast and sharp resolution). The stats don't always tell the truth visually. A 14 inch laptop would be the minimum for usability. If you are going to make games, and thus play games, you will want a good video card that matches the specs for AAA games. Long battery life is also key. If you go painting you will want at least 4 hours typically.

if you are an online students then it does not matter which type of comp you have. but you will be unable to take a desktop outside or with you if go out of town.

Know the limitations of both and pick what is best for you. I completely agree with jason about screen size and battery life. Also, I cannot stress screen quality. I don't know a ton about it but I think my screen in LED backlit (again, i think) and it has great color. If you already have a desktop and it isn't good enough then maybe being able to buy up some ram and invest in a top notch monitor would be your best bet. Also, having a video card that lets you dual screen (attaching a 2nd monitor) is amazing for painting.

Also, digital media is not the only tool you will be using.
