Here are a few creatures I came up with for a graphic novel project I'm currently working on. Story is set in the very distant future where humans have fled deep underground and now live. The creatures below the surface are mostly creepy, crawly, and well protected from the harsh conditions of the subterranean world. First is the descendant of ants, now over 7 feet tall and the greatest rivals to future humans. Second is an armadillo, a small dog-sized creature that feeds on fungi and small insects. Can retract its' snout and legs into its' shell, pretending to be a large rock to predators. Last is a trio of bats, these football-sized creatures reproduce through contact of water and sprout out small puffs of bats. As they mature, more pairs of wings are grown into adulthood.

Thanks. Yep, completely hand drawn and coloured in Photoshop CS2.
MausC: I'll take that as a compliment, since I did start out drawing Pokémon as a kid.

Here's a bit of a dragon I'm working on. :l I have a feeling it might need something on the left to balance it out. at least in the lower corner.
also, hello again CAorg it's been a long time.

I am definetely not an expert but I think tails in animals usually look like an extension of the spine. But in your dragon it looks like it has been sticked to its behind rather than looking like its own tail. You should change the starting point and/or the starting angle of the tail.
Thanks for sharing your work

Probably it is just me but I think some parts of your image seems 2d whereas someparts look fine. For example the left side (the head, chest and front left leg) of the painting seems a little bit 2d compared to the right side of the painting. You may try changing the values a little bit to make it look more 3d like you did on the rear legs.
Also the effects of your light source is different in the character and the shadow. It seems a little bit like the shadow was cast by a light source and the creature is not affected by that source but rather affected by a different one.
But as I said, these may just be me.
Thanks for sharing your work by the way![]()

Hi
Thanks for sharing your work you are very skilled. I am probably a beginner compared to you but something catched my attention:
The eyes gloving in the dark seems kinda weird. Especially the ones at the rigth bottom side of the painting look like you spilled some red paint over the original work. They dont look like they are in the painting but more like on the painting. I am probably wrong but even if I am right I honestly dont know how you can correct those eyes (not all of them 2 or 3 of them) . Thanks
Trainin' my cute-muscles.

This is a monster I made for a classwork based in this old picture from a sticker collection: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3042/...4f679a252d.jpg
I used a pen and then added some shadow with photoshop.

So much great artwork here. Loving the epic dragon as well as rattlecan's flesh monster.

There are some cool beasties in this thread! Here's one of mine - a creature who's the offspring of a famous lunar traveler:

very impressive work love your style
Spent about three hours browsing the thread. Felt a touch inspired. I don't own a tablet unfortunately. I'm also bad at hands.
been lurking this thread quite a bit, but haven't contributed anything, so I'll dump an unfinished wip and some pencil sketches I've done a while back!

Some creature designs. Made by using a random number generator to pick two animals from a list plus a form (taur, anthro or feral) and then trying to come up with something based on that. Quite an interesting challenge!

Those look great Lhune - and it sounds like an awesome way to exercise teh art skillz.
Taur I get, and anthro is a full body blend of both (if I understand correctly) - but how would you define feral?
Feral is pretty much plain beast. No human traits what so ever (including intelligence). Anthro basically means "humanified", or personified, but the latter is a bit vague. In my case it means they get a slightly humanoid appearance and gesture to them, similar to a werewolf (though the cars in the Disney movie "Cars" count as anthro as well, it's a pretty broad term).
Thanks!

So, first time posting on conceptart.org. I keep hearing how great everything here is for professionals and constructive criticism.
So, I recently colored this old monster design and I'm... Not sure it worked. Thoughts?
Splurge: welcome to CA! In terms of colours, and style there's not much that really needs to be addressed, depending on what your going for. The biggest issue I have with this, is the creature's pose. In the lineart I had no idea what I was looking at until I scrolled down and saw the colours. the skinny head and neck gets lost within the silhouette of the creature so it doesn't read as well as it should.
here I took your creature and turned it into a black silhouette...hopefully it makes more sense what I'm getting at...
you can see that the creature's design doesn't read all that well...you'll want the creature's head silhouetted as well so the overall design shows more clearly...also try to avoid tangents, if you'll notice the creature's hind toenail is just touching the edge of the other foot, you'll want to give it some space between the two or overlap the toe behind the foot...
