CHoW#245 :: Jack the Ripper

@mercuralis i like it a lot but it feels like any gentleman in the 19th century im missing the jack the ripper feeling ..

Oh, good. Then I'm going in the right direction.

See, I kinda think that one of the reasons he never got caught was because he didn't LOOK like a vicious murderer. He probably didn't wander the streets wielding a knife dripping in blood with a sadistic leer on his villainously mustachioed face. To paraphrase Wednesday Addams: he's a serial killer. He looks just like everyone else. Or all those people they interview after they catch a serial killer: He seemed like such a nice man.

Personally, I find the idea that Jack the Ripper was hiding behind the facade of a decent person far creepier than if he was wearing an outfit that screams "I just slaughtered three prostitutes!" ... but that's me. We're all entitled to our own interpretations, right? Since I hate painting gore and guts, this was the way I chose to go.

So, for me the challenge will be creating a character who is outwardly normal, but with hints of his true personality lurking in the details. As I add those in, maybe he'll feel more like Jack the Ripper to you. Maybe he won't. But then, maybe that's what I'm going for.

A little update Starting to shade it all together. When I colored the blood I realized I was getting a Miller look. Maybe I'll stick with it .?.

Obacmar - nice concept but your perspective is way off. The horizon looks to be about where Jack's nipples are, which means that any other figures in the image on the same ground plane should also cross the horizon at the nipples. Hope that helps

Well I haven't made a post here in a long while but figured I couldn't pass up some good ol' Jack the Ripper. Just some quick sketching, trying to get a feel for the time. Some absolutely "Killer" entries so far, everyone!

thats totally true and as you can see i had the same approach i like it also a little more understated.. but you could maybe point out that he is following a lady or sth i mean create the connection.. otherwise it really could be anybody..

Thx Danlambert, I didn't even realize how far I was off. I guess the buildings were dictating the perspective in the BG. I was confused with my mistake so I used 3dmax to take a see how far I was off. WAY off! hehe. Now I gotta juggle some buildings around. Gotta work double time to make it to the finish.

why is that a sad day? there is no greatest and best anyway.. maybe he meant the greatest traditional.. his work is pretty ripped off from fazetta himself.. imo
