    Mister's Uni Sketchbook

I am starting a new sketchbook to keep myself motivated during uni, I've fallen into a drawing slump and am determined to get back into daily drawing. Hopefully I will maintain this thread better and would deeply appreciate all crits and advice.

I'll start by reposting my portfolio I used to get into uni and then I'll update regularly so I can mark my progress throughout the year.

I spent the last few days of my break painting, I have had oils for ages but have always been scared to use them so i decided to go all out and try to lose my fear of them. I am somewhat satisfied with the beginnings of this but i know that its pretty poor, any suggestions would be much appreciated. I have also been trying to go back to basics with basic proportions, the torso area is something i've been struggling with for a while and am trying to once again put my fear aside and just draw with no regard for how it turns out, i can see some improvement which is good but still a long way to go. the last picture is just a red marker and pencil scribble but i thought it was a nice effect.

Thank you Dimi~ I appreciate it but I really am no-where near where i want to be with my drawing.

Did a few more torso studies today, I think I'm getting more confident. I need to work out the distinct musculature

just did a few quick poses to see if my grasp of the torso anatomy has improved. I think its coming easier but i really need to do some arm/leg hand/feet studies

I really like what you have so far, it's certainly an interesting style you have- would love to see more soon.

It's also good you got some ambition to improve, people on here can only give so much advice what really matters is being able to identify your own errors and weaknesses (something I really need to do)
Good luck and keep up the good work.

Your style makes those studies sing! Also like that you do them in pen. Something I should maybe start doing. Pen seems to give you a sureness with your line that pencils can't. Maybe that's just me though.

Naidy - Thanks a lot, I definitely want to improve and gathering my drawings here is a great way to review what i've done, I am already seeing what my fixations are and the common errors i run into. Comments are definitely a nice addition but as you said, you can't rely on others to steer you in the right direction. Thanks again.

Tides - Thanks! These are mostly pencil but I went through a long period of only using pens so I still think I still use a lot of pen techniques in my penciling like trying to get things in one line and using cross hatching for tone, I really need to do some value studies so I can take full advantage of the subtlety of the pencil.

Here are a few sketches from today.

Great drawings and studies! u have a really nice expressive line. i enjoy looking at them. if u want a crit id just say to watch some proportions, and dabble into more color (i shud do that too) keep going! your very good. dont give up, its worth it. =)

oh and one more thing, some of your drawings are a bit small. It wud probly help to fill more of the page (only some are small) it will be easier for u to identify problems, and i rekon it will look better on the page. cya later!

Tronrobot: Thanks for the comment, Proportions are definitely something i'm working towards right now, trying to make sure i pay attention to the height and width relation of things as well as basic anatomical proportions, the torso still bothers me. As for colour, i'm a bit afraid of it, its never come naturally to me but I will introduce it gradually and see how I go with it. Drawing a teensy bit bigger now too.

felt a bit freer today with my gestural stick figures but went rigid when i tried to do some figure studies, hopefully it'll get easier, some more studies are needed.

Thanks a lot guys, I feel like I'm making a bit of progress. Still finding it hard to sit down and make a developed picture but I think i'll definitely be able to start doing the in the next few weeks. For now i'm trying to do more photo refs and studies from life.

EDIT: Just added a portrait, then a revised one. might do a 3rd revision next week

Very awesome stuff. We all know what it feels like to not be where we want to be though.

You're obviously a step above me in skill, but there's one thing I can add. Watch the stiffness of your people - you said you've noticed this, and just remember to draw the line of action before of anything else, and really exaggerate it. Obviously you don't have a cartoony style, but your drawings will look stiff even if the line of action is the exact, realistic position of the spine.

    Hope to see more.

Whoosh, art school is more full on than I expected, ironically I've had hardly any time to draw and I lack the motivation in any time I do have. Want to start this thread up again to hopefully give me some added incentive to keep doing studies. Lately i've been working on basics like tone and perspective as well as a bit of character design, just going to upload a few scraps from the last few months to kick things off and then hopefully i'll aim for weekly updates at the least. Sorry for the small pictures, they are small drawings so blowing them up does them no favors.

Once again any advice in where I could focus my efforts would be appreciated.
