Pieter Wessels - Portfolio Review

My name is Pieter Wessels, I'm 26 years of age and I am currently attending TAD. My major is Entertainment Design.

I want to ideally be a freelance designer, from concept art to illustration to tattoo design to photography. I want to be my own creative force and have my own business.

Any advice/information that will help me fulfill those desires will be most helpful.

For a few of these (1, 2 and 5 mostly) there are issues with proportion and placement. In 1 her eye is floating away, in 2 his head and neck are too big for his body, and in 5 the eyes are too high up. Take it slow, and regularly review your own work to make sure things don't seem "off."

For the original work you have here, you're falling into a trap that I usually fall for as well and that's the "look at this" or "presentation" composition. In the first, second, and last image the subjects are all just sort of standing there, presenting themselves to the viewer. Of course these types of images are often necessary to do, but for portfolio work it never hurts to have a few candid scenes. People doing things are more interesting than people standing and posing. these often help us get a feel for who they are and what they normally do.

Hey man, thanks for the feedback. Yeah, the classic "head too big" and elongation of torso/face/whatever proportional issues I have.

Thanks for pointing out the "look at this" aspect to my original work, I actually didn't even realize that I was doing that until you mentioned it. It's so obvious to me now. Funny how that works.
