    David Perteet's Sketchbook

First some older stuff. Apparently I did this piece back when I was color AND saturation blind. Hopefully it will make for a compelling thumbnail.

I was working at a creature fx shop that was doing stuff for "Xena". I'd heard that we might be doing a "Island of Dr. Moreau" type of episode with half human/half animal characters. I did these on my own to try to extract some design work. The episode was never realized, but I did get to do some fun stuff for other projects.

This is one of my first complete color photoshop pieces. Man, I struggled and struggled on this one. I just didn't feel like I had any control with the tablet. After "completing" it (in disgust and frustration), I realized that my Wacom wasn't configured to the aspect ratio of my new monitor, so I was constantly trying to compensate for skewed diagonal strokes. So here it is, in all of its unfixed glory.

Hey, good start. Some pretty nasty stuff in here, but that's not a bad thing. Good texturing on the pencils.
Would like to see more fast/loose work like the charcoal/soft pencil sketch at near the top of this page.

    Keep posting!

CoW Sound Round submission. Painting the culvert was WAY harder than doing the creature.

Me, too! Do you know where I can steal some nice, loose stuff and pretend its mine? Seriously, I sat down on a Wacom stylus years ago and haven't been able to loosen up since.

    I do appreciate the input.

Man, I liked the fantasy portraits. Very good pencilrendering. They look better than the complete characters, maybe a sign that you should work a bit more on bodies to get them on the same level.
And I believe you, that in the last painting the culvert was hard, but you've made it good! It's just a bit irritating that it looks so blurred. That'll be okay if the dirt is blurred too to have an effect of depth. But now it just doesn't fit together. At least, that's my thought.

So, apparently makeup fx is dead.

(Aww...you're just saying that because you're going through a dry spell.)

Nope. The world is a big dirty sock of despair.

(Aww...should we call the WAAAmbulance for ya, big guy?)

    Big guy? Like I'm fat?

(Did somebody find out today that the project they were counting on getting has been awarded to a shop that isn't likely to hire you?)

    Hrmm. Maybe.

(Why not use this uninvited free time to expand your skills? You know...skills that are increasingly important in the entertainment industry?)

    FINE.
