Hey man - I found the best way to learn skintones and portraits: guess what?! SELFPORTRAIT. ;-)
Get a mirror and start - it works wonders. And as LTPLissken mentioned: photostudies.

Updateeee.Crappy Painted head and planar analysis of the head.I like the whole idea of drawing-sculpting iam not there yet but i enjoy doing those greyscale studies
Most important thing is that you enjoy your work, just as you said.
You have to feel good and happy while you are painting, just like Bob Ross was.
So for now only happiness, and later the good stuff will come by itself, the sex
drugs and rock and roll. You just don’t need to rush things. Take it easy, step
by step. When you paint a head, you stop for a moment, observe it, then rotate
the canvas, flip it over and back. Step back from the computer screen, take one
more look. Observe it. Multiple times. Then again paint a bit, then observe.
Have a beer, coffee or coke. Have a cigar. Paint, observe and repeat. Take
it easy do not rush, we have a lot of time, the most important is that you enjoy.
I enjoy watching your latest paintings, cause your head planes and values
are getting better. You are on the right track. Together we will go to the
Luna Park if not next week, then next year. Take care till then.
Heads from half ref half mind todays digital and i have issues with my figures i know shit about the full figure and i ll start again by memorizing the measurements and forms of the body. And i must do somthing to reinforce my security with my line i might have a problem cause iam not thinking enough or not thinking right any suggestions?
No worries mate, just keep up. Line accuracy comes from drawing incredible amounts of sketches in your artistic journey. Keep honing the fundamentals and you will go up in no time.

yepyep, just keep doing lots of full-body studies and keeping proportion and anatomy in mind.
i reccommend Constructive anatomy by Bridgman, awesome book
Figures and Woman from mind anddd some photoreferenced torso studies
--Flaskpost Thnx so much for passing by m8 much appreciated
--LtPlissken Yes i must learn to be patient when iam making piecies and studies, ioften catch myself to just let go and draw without thinking thnx for passing by take care.
As always it's nice to see your work Jim. Try to work on your studies more accurately, pay attention where the different elements are in relation to each other. For example distance between eyes, nose tip in relation to mouth etc.
Καλή συνέχεια![]()

Hey man, I see cool progress across your sketchbook, your last figures especially. Don't be afraid to use some big hard brushes with deliberate strokes, the fiddly details won't get in your way : )
Mooooreee:2 Characters, they anatomically suck i know buuut i didnt want to work with ref aid just to see what i can do and some studies and sketches.
maths82 thnx for passing by man!Ill keep that in mind
You are getting better with every post. The progress is definitely showing. And your monsters and torso practices are very good. I would practice on drawing hands also. It shows with the monster in post #186. But the head and shading is awesome. Just keep drawing![]()
Good improvement dimi. Your practicing the right stuff and its getting better and better :-)
This one is your best study so far i`d say:
I like the way you keep it simple and loose. More stuff!
Thank you guys for the feedback really appreciated
Some stuff from yesterday
Thought I would return the favour!
You're improving, and your understanding of building blocks is getting good, I think my biggest pointer is, be fluid. Perhaps do some gesture work from this website:
http://www.quickposes.com/
Get down the spine, angle of hips and shoulders, and then limbs, it'll get you to flow a little. Not that you're bad mind you! Just good practise
I think out of it all you seem to be struggling with polishing work. I think do some few refined pieces, you don't have to do full pieces, just go in and do refined paintings of an eye or hand, stuff that gets you to be more strict on your polishing. You'll get there, and its great to see your progress. I'm impressed![]()
Good luck Jim!![]()
Just some sketches for today Animals and little gestures.I should focus on my observational skills iam having a hard time visuallizing forms in unfamiliar themes like animals reptiles and such.
self-epidemic Thnx man really appreciating what you said cheers![]()
thanks for posting in my sketchbook. You have lots of good studies here. Good construction with your figure studies. The only thing I would say is may broaden your subject. At the mo its all figure studies and I know that because you want to get good at drawing the figure from your mind but maybe mix it up a bit. Also draw lots and lots more from life it really does help with everything and tackling those fundamentals. Maybe do some longer pencil studies to to work on your rendering. Keep up the good work.
Hey dimi, mega thanks for your comment in my thread. Man, you're really kicking out those fundamentals. Keep that going. Stick with those heads, heads are hard. I would recommend studying the Asaro Head. It will help with the planes of the head. You can find a pretty good gallery >HERE< As ja1307 said above, draw some stuff from life and spend longer on some pencil renders...Good progress so far. Keep on soldier!
yayyyyyy i see improvment mankeep going
