The bat in post 23 is fantastic- you really hit a good thing there.
You should try the same approach with human faces, it might help you wrangle in your structure.
I think the # 1 best advice I can give you is to relax your hand. Practice your line control.
If you start with a lighter more controlled line you have lots of room to explore the form before your study gets dark and muddy.
Keep doing the basicsthey'll pay off in the end.
