Trend? It actually has been going on for a long time. These things just don't come into the US market very often though.
If you try searching Amazon.co.jp, they have all kinds of reference books geared for manga artists, including buildings, classrooms, train stations, etc. They usually go for around 20 dollars more or less, without shipping.

Sketchbook 2009-2012 available on Graphicly (Free) and Gumroad (Name-Your-Price).
Exactly what velderia said. This isn't anything new.
News to me, though.
K-kinda tempted...
That's why building fundamentals is important, its no secret that even manga-ka use a lots references. These "pose files" are everywhere in Japanese bookstores - it'd be great if US bookstores had the same - as opposed to the really poorly illustrated and written "how to draw manga" books that I've seen.
I think it has alot to do with how Japanese people in general highly value things like hard work.
Dentist's office? Damn, isn't that TOO specific? Japan is awesome!
EDIT: But the still have those OTHER sort of books...

I chuckled a little. If anything this stuff kicks the crap out of Chris Hart, so it has something to be proud of, even though it's probably messing people up regardless.
