Summer Programs

I'm looking for good summer programs for high school freshmen. Unfortunately, a large number of schools around here (NJ/NYC area) require me to be 16 to enter. I'm looking for any decent summer program in the US where I can go to a campus and stay there (opposed to just visiting the campus every weekend...)

Another question :

For the Pratt application for their summer program, they want only "high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors."

I will be finishing 9th grade in June of this year, so I won't technically be a freshman (but I won't technically be a sophomore either...I'll be a freshmore or a sophoman...). Does this mean that I'm valid for the Pratt summer program?

It's called Otis and it's in LA! Has anyone else been to/heard of the college? I'd love a couple opinions on it!

actually you would be a sophomore because if you passed 9th grade, then your in 10th grade. You'd probably want to call them though.

just wait a year, it's not terrible, unless the comet hits us.. spend this summer just drawing on your own, you'd be surprised how much you can teach yourself. hmm, sort of like teaching yourself to learn.

those summer programs are good for meeting people your age, but learning wise, eh.

Check out the one that the Cleveland Institute of Art offers. Not sure if they have anything on their site yet though (www.cia.edu). It's a one week, overnight program, about $700 I think. I gotta say that some kids hated it and others loved it. You'll be taught by two of the best teachers I've ever had, and they'll be teaching things that will serve as a foundation for future skills. I helped out with it last year and may again this summer. There was not figure drawing or painting, although if I do it again I'd like to have a figure drawing workshop at least one of the days, but what you'll get will help you understand the visual world sooo much more. Well there has been a recent splurge of 15 year old artists, so I'd better get an edge.

Seriously, though. I think I need some formal training. I've been teaching myself a lot through Bridgeman's works (at this thread : http://www.photoshoptechniques.com/f...&threadid=6302) but I'm lacking motivation sometimes. It's good to get pushed around sometimes.

I guess I'm technically a sophomore, but I don't know if Pratt recognizes that! I'll email 'em.

Bombesei, I checked out the program, and unfortunately, it's for 10-12. "This is a one-week residential program open to grades 10-12 with priority given to junior and seniors." Still, it's bookmarked for future reference .

The Pennsylvania Academy Of Fine Arts has a number of summer courses. Has anyone heard anything good/bad about 'em. Has anyone actually been to one of the courses? Any opinions would be appreciated.

In case anyone was wondering, I emailed Pratt and I got the following reply :

"Hello Mukund

To be a resident student you need to have completed you sophomore year in
high school. If you live a commutable distance from Pratt and do not plan
to live on campus during the program we discuss if being a commuter student
is a right option for you.

Please let me know if you live close to the campus and then we can take the
next steps.

The Atelier Workshops are offered in June. The workshops give students a taste of the intensity and momentum offered in the full time program. Ask for a catalogue - keep trying if you don't get a reply. Apprenticeship style program. Less academy more studio-school. Students work as administrators and answer emails. Sometimes best just to call.

Known for its "July Intensive Program" which gives students a taste of traditional sight-size drawing through cast drawing, life-drawing and realist painting methods taught basis the level of the student and their knowledge of traditional methods.
All classes taught in English.
A non-profit school that tends to draw students especially from the UK.

Regular city buses available to reach villa/farmhouses (which often contain apartment rentals) in Tuscan villages surrounding Florence. You're in the city one minute, and out in Tuscany the next.
