I graduated this january with my short animation 'Fake Light'

I liked it a lot. I like the shakiness of the colors, gives it an interesting look. The transition between baby to man is also pretty well done. The little kid playing the ball (apple?) was also nicely done and gave a lot of secondary action elements, so hooray for that.

My problems were in some instances where the frames hold for too long. Like the girl walking down the train and standing near the old man. it just holds there for way too long. That, and I felt you sacrificed some fluid animation instances while trying to keep the characters realistically rendered. It would've worked with loose sketchy lines too (just like the coloring, which was one of your strong points there)

But dude, very well done. Keep rocking sir.

I agree with your comment This was a tricky project as it costed me a lot of time to shade and render every frame. So sometimes I chose for loops of 4 frames, which harmed the animation.

That was very good. Very different art style than what you see everyday, kinda gives it that spooky effect (I found it abit scary!). I have to agree with the comment above, 1 or 2 scenes where held for abit too long like the girl on the train, but honestly this is very well done. Keep it up!

I know that you were trying to go for that 'shimmery-painterly' look but I feel like it just made the characters pop out of their environments, like they were in a different world or something. I also agree with what PLeon said. I totally support animators that want to do something realistic but if you have to sacrifice the quality of animation to keep that level of realism then it almost isn't worth it.

Also there are obvious moments where you either rotoscoped your animation or used HEAVY video reference. Which isn't a bad thing but in this case it really took me out of the story because that kind of fluid animation wasn't matching the rest of the animation I saw before (like the sperm or the girl eating a lolipop).

Hey Dana_T, thanks for your comment. It's something that bothered me aswell. The choice was cartoony or realisticly. The first one didnt fit the theme in my opinion, so I went with the realistic painterly style.
I bit of too much to chew and then tried to chew it I'm happy anyway to have accepted the challenge, learned some valuable things!

About the rotoscope thing, if you're interested :
The girl with the red hair was rotoscoped, as was the headbanger. The main character's run at the end was heavily referenced. Everything else is animated.

Nice work Lewis. Yea the rotoscoping was noticable but not in a bad way. Would have perhaps been cool to only have the "main" charcters (girl and guy) rotoscoped as it made for an interesting contrast of reality.

The bit that I would say really stood out as a bit jarring was the slow motion on the dog as it leapt at the guy as he got off the train. I think it was given too much focus on not drawn well enough to warrant so much time. Perhaps a much faster encounter lasting only a few frames but with much stronger visuals would have given a better effect.

The pan up at the end also seemed a little off, it took me a while to actually understand the "underground pipe" section seing as the road is instantly viewed as if from a high angle.

Other than that I really liked it, the mood was strong and the idea of what the guy was feeling seemed clear.

Hahaha! NICE! I loved it, I'm a huge fan of the old school toons, so that's a plus for me.

I guess a minor nit pick, and it's not even that big of a deal cause it's fine as it is, but I would've probably made the planet's sickness/passing out a bit longer. Like, he gets dizzy, pukes, then gets on all four, pukes some more, then dies, and probably use a more exaggerated or double take reaction from Harold, I remember they used to love doing those back in the day.

Again, it's a minor nitpick though, good stuff man.

Looking great Lewis, I really like the puffing factory and seal beating, I think any animator will have a certain fondness for that style of animation. Steamboat Willie is still one of my favorites, I think it was probably the most violent imagery I saw as a very young child.

Nice work Lewis. Kinda had a Linklater feel to it. I was really engrossed up to the end where the guy dissappears. It was really getting good. I dunno about the sperm thing tho', films always seem to start that way!
