This has been mostly just research day. Been reading and looking trough some awesome paintings trying to learn some new neat tricks.
I did a paintover to my latest environment study. Tried to integrate some of the new stuff I learned today.
Still not quite there but a bit closer I think.
Nicky: heh, no probs mate. I wish I were actually. He has some wicked atelier pieces in hes portfolio!
Late night thing that started as thumb and then evolved into this B&W piece.
It depicts Postosuchus (Carnivorous archosaur related more closely to crocs than to dinosaurs) crossing a stream.

No painting today. Had to tidy some portfolio stuff and then I got into sculpting Andrewsarchus skull. if you don't know what andrewsarchus is shame on you! It's the largest mammalian land predator we currently know of. The only known remains of it is a single skull but it's a whopper! 80 cm long or so. And the skull is weeeeeeeird.

Schmid study and more sculpting experimentation. It's a Homotherium skull. Homotherium being the most awesome sabertoothed cat that ever existed....EVER.
Also, sent my first job application for game artist position today. Sort of shitting bricks right now. Really nervous. I guess we shall see if my skills are worth anything.

LOVE that barn study out of interest did you use a brush on Painter I have been trying them out but cant find one that I can get that kind of effect

That Schmid study looks sweet! I don't know where you applied for a game artist position, but I heard frozenbyte is looking for some artists with both 2d and 3d skills, maybe shoot them an application too. It might be they found some already, since they were going pretty hard core on the recruiting in the last idga night, but maybe not.
Spudonkey: Thanks! I don't use painter. Just photoshop. Essentially what I'm doing is using combo of rake brush and smudge tool.

Absolutely stunning brushwork! Love how buttery those strokes are, particularly in the piece I've tried to insert here(hopefully it works
I've highlighted a couple spots I was curious about in terms of techniques, where you've got some dimension to the paint...I've achieved that with painter, and have played with sometimes adding a slight emboss to brushstrokes to simulate an impasto treatment in photoshop, but it's a bit laborious and kind of gets in the way of flowing through a painting, at least for me...have you used a similar technique? Don't mean to pry if this is a technique you'd rather keep to yourself, just curious.

What I did there is indeed a bit laborius and you were absolutely right. I used emboss.
Once I was done with the painting, I copied the layer, turned it into B&W, embossed it and then moved the original painting layer on top of the embossed layer. Then it was just matter of going trough blending options to get what I wanted, adjusting layer opacity and such.
I'm not entirely happy with the result. I wish there was some cool easy way to do sot of impasto paint in photoshop. :/
phew, Been a few days since I last posted. I promise I haven't been lazy. I have been painting, but it's stuff I can't really share right now. And no it's not work for Rovio. I still haven't heard from them.

Awesome stuff here man! Really love your brushwork. A quick question from a nooby, if you don't mind. How do you handle hard edges/soft edges and loose edges (That's what it's called when one edge kind of blends into another?) Do you just change the softness setting on the brush?
Alantyn: Hey thanks! I use variety of tools when working with edges. Blur, smudge, blender tool, Healing brush.
In addition to that I have found it useful to use brushes that on them selves have varied edge. Sharp on one side soft on another.
That really helps creating diversity of edges.
Man...slim pickings. Partially photoreffed study. I need to get more studies done.
