"Sketches - very fast drawings – usually take from 5 to 15 minutes. The task of a sketch is by using minimum means, without detailed rendering to convey the impression of a model and to apply this to a sketch. Sketches are very important in academic drawing. They help a young artist to prevent fragmentary observation, to develop his vision and develop his hand. Models for such work are usually not posing models but people we see in our every day environments, groups of people in various interiors as well as on the street. The exception is a nude model.
Studies are also quick drawings that usually made for no longer than an hour. Their task is not only to convey an impression, but also to fix as much information in a short period of time. This kind of drawing is often used to gather material for artwork, as well as for making portraits.
When making sketches, it is easier for a student to convey an internal state and a character of a model if it's a familiar person. When making long academic drawings in a studio where model settings are offered by their professor, it is difficult for students to draw a distinctive portrait of a stranger. It is another thing for a student to draw one of his friends, which he has known for a long time and with which a personal relationship has been developed. In such case, an artist cannot remain indifferent.
And its personal, «heartfelt» attitude toward real life can turn even a student's work into a work of art.
In working on quick drawings the following materials are used: soft graphite pencil, pen, brush and sepia. Soft and friable materials, as well as hard pencils are usually used for large format drawings. Paper is usually taken of a small size, since the time for drawing is limited. In addition, during drawing an album is in the hands of a student, so large-format is hard to keep in sight. Sketches provide ample opportunities for experimentation with paper and materials."
