    Electric demons in love

    Hi everyone!
I'm new here at CA and I'm starting this sketchbook hoping it'll push me to draw more and better. I've been lurking around here for a while, and I'm massively impressed with the push-forward attitude of the community; I want in too!
I have a few years of art school behind me, but that was a long time ago now. I started studying computer science instead of trying to make some kind of art career, and I'm starting to feel uncomfortably rusty. Time to do some art pushups!

I think I'll mainly post studies in the beginning, but we'll se where it ends up.

Comments and critiques are always welcome!

I've spent the last two days drawing hands. I always think they lack character and look generally uninteresting in my drawings... I guess my understanding of joints and knuckles has been kind of limited.
I think I'm starting to get it now though, so time well spent!

First batch is my own hand, for the other two I looked at photos.

Nothing much happening in my sketchbook... :-/
I got a job in another city, and it's really hard to find time for anything else. Hoping to move closer soon!

Anyway, I managed 2 color/face studies tonight. I feel like I'm always too lazy when I paint digital, I cheat with gradients and overlays and don't really get into the color... So weird. I love color!

Recently I've started following Riven Phoenix online figure drawing tutorial: http://www.alienthink.com/inventiont....blogspot.html
It's been quite helpful so far, I really need to brush up on general proportitons and stuff. I like his structured approach to memorizing the form; if this goes here, then this goes here and so on. I've worked my way to lesson 6, construction a mannequin front, back and side view and now starting to put it into perspective... that's when things started to get confusing, lol.

Instead of doing a lot of guesswork, I went to posemaniacs, figuring the crazy perspectives there would be great to figure out how to work with the mannequin from different angles. I think I need to do a lot more of these...

Been busy with work, as usual...
Tonight I saw an awesome photo at deviantart, and I decided it would be perfect as a color exercise. I spent a lot more time on it than I intended...
I wish I could draw skin color like that from my head!

Thanks Rhubix, I'll keep sketching on whenever I find the time!
In a way I think it's a good thing I have so little time to draw nowaday, it forces me to do sketches and studies instead of spending massive amounts of time on single pieces.

Speaking of studies, I've made it to lesson 12 in Riven Phoenix' online figure-drawing-from-imagination tutorial. The last lessons have been about the profile view of the skull. I've learned to draw a funky little chart, and also drawn a couple of real skulls from photo ref to try and ground this knowledge in something real. I have learned that every skull looks different... :p

    Skull dump

I've kept concentrating on skulls... really starting to get sick of them now, lol! I found a pretty nice resource pack somewhere with shots of a skull from a myriad different angles. My goal was to draw all of them, but jeez! They're so many!

The drawings were all pretty long sessions, I tried my best to capture the forms, but I find it really hard to do using just lines. I'm more of a painter I guess, and it started to turn out to be more of a cross-hatching exercise than anatomy study, so I decided to just paint instead... For me it feels like I understand the forms much better when I paint them, because then the brush stroke becomes the plane, but when I'm drawing I have to rely on outlines and where there are none it feels like I lose a lot of shape. Of course line can describe shape as well, but it's more subtle. A brush stroke is shape, and a line more hints at shape, I guess.
The paintings are quickies, all done tonight. Funny that it still feels like they have more information in them than the drawings!

Wow, things have been really slow lately, I just work and work. Starting to feel stressed because there are so many studies to do, and so little time.

Some posemaniacs stuff and a beholder I started but never finished (a funny guy, tho :p)

    Thank you for encouragement, blazingdimensions!

Almost a year since I updated...
Nothing much happened art-wise. I moved, so I got my own room and a little more time, but it hasn't really taken effect yet. I feel very scattered!
I'm just gonna dump some stuff I've done in the last week or so. I found the imagineFX anatomy special I bought last year, and started studying it, that's what all the notes and little pillow-people is from. There's more on paper, but my scanner isn't plugged in so it's probably gonna stay there. I find doing these kind of studies really boring, but it's very useful too. I have no clue what goes on under the skin, but now I know fancy latin names of muscles and is a little less confused about backs & shoulders. Next is the lower arm and wrist...

I also painted a screenshot from Aliens, Ripley rockin' a big gun (it looks really fuzzy and wonky).
And a little cartoony me, with my Måns. I can't get clean lines to save my life!

I wish I had something more useful to say, but I'm really impressed with your work!
