    Beginning My Wayward Journey

Hi, I'm 20 years old and completely new to drawing.

I started off with Betty Edwards' "The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" in 2010. I'll start with a couple of drawings from there. I was not far away from that self-portrait exercise but I left it.

This year I started with Andrew Loomis' "Fun With A Pencil" and I hope to stick with it till the end and progress to his other books.

I'm just getting started and I'd welcome any form of criticism (even the harshest, but lol be reasonable) if it helps me become better.

Here's a couple from Betty Edwards' exercises:

good to see you start with the fundamentals! Remember to use basic shapes for every form you are going to draw.
Maybe you can use different pencils - hard ones to draw the basic lines and soft ones to draw the details and contour. That makes it possible to see the whole process and people can tell you better where you male mistakes if you stuck in your learning process (but I hope not that this will happen )

Keep up the good work. You're off to good start. Just remember that when it get's tough is when it's most important to try harder.

    Hardword, Dedication, Dicipline.
Hey, I'm a crazy guy from London convinced I can learn anything ( I believe that anyone can). Currently I'm learning Spanish, Japanese, how to draw and whole bunch of other things. On my blog http://www.davidmansaray.com I write about autodidactic learning and I give tips on how you can become a better learner. Come on by.

And, I of course have a Sketchbook

Yes, Loomis stressed the importance of basic shapes early on in the book itself when he was explaining how to draw the head starting with a simple circle. I started using two different pencils after about 3-4 posts I think. A 2B for the basic outline and a 6B to finish it off. In some sketches I've erased some of the construction lines but I've stopped doing that in some of the recent ones.

    Thanks for your advice.

Ive dabbled into some Loomis stuff too, great stuff so far- dont forget to experiment with your own brain though, imagine what you want to draw, and then just attempt it keeping in mind the small 'rules' uve learnt in loomis =]
good work though, make me proud!

Yes, I plan to do that towards the end of the book, right now I'm just trying to master the technique and keep my practice momentum going.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Damn right I'll make you proud haha!

Currently working on the Figure section of the book and it's taking me a bit of time to get used to. So it might be a few more days before I make any uploads.

Apologies for the light scans, especially the first two. They were just lightly done and these are all just early efforts.

click on go advanced and use the attachment manager to upload your images, they'll be full size and it's way less of a hassle than imageshack.

The key to getting better at anything is to do it a lot.

Plus, it anything happens to your image shack account, then this sketchbook will be filled with broken links. So yes, attachment manager is good.
    My Sketchbook

And then God said, "Let us make man in our likeness and our image. Let us make him ridiculously hard to draw so that poor artists everywhere will have to spend 10,000+ hours failing repeatedly before they can begin to capture the form and likeness onto a two-dimensional surface." And there was man. And it was good. And artists everywhere lost their minds.

I like that you are having fun with drawing shapes. One fun exercise I like doing is sketching on the train on my way home. Just go free and sketch the least aggressive/ nervous person you see(I say this because I don't want you to get into a fight with anyone—hah). Also try to sketch shirts from a hanger as that will help you with transitions of curves and straight lines as well as folds.
