I hope to be good one day to draw the Balrog from the Lord of the Rings movie. The image would be when the whip end flares after the creature whirls and snaps it. Gandalf would be facing him on the bridge.

It's a nerdy thing, but I would love to be able to capture the intensity of that moment.

and all of the fan art in Sega Visions magazine. Wildlife art was a big interest as well, though it's not half as challenging (in other words, fun) as concept art.

Well, this wasn't when I started to draw, like most here I just wanted to be able to draw everything and my own ideas so this was more of a early mid-draw crisis, but...
Pyramidhead (not the movie version). Oh the tween torment and nights when I cried myself to sleep because I couldn't draw his helmet in the right perspective, or in the right anything.

I really, really wanted to paint this:
    Name: Warhammer.jpg
Views: 528
Size: 93.0 KB

Edit: I removed my image because in retrospect it felt like an attention grab. I'll do a proper master study.. One day, baby...

Dave Gallagher painted this. Thanks Vermis.

I can't believe you reminded me of this!!! Moosh from LOZ: Oracle of Ages. Very random. It was in the booklet that came with the GameBoy, I remember struggling for hours with colored pencil.

Ha ha! I was something like 5 years old and I had this picture in my head of a little girl wearing a white dress with a wreath of flowers in her hair. I tried so hard to get it out on paper and couldn't understand why it wasn't working. That's the earliest memory I have of wanting to draw something. I also remember my kindergarten teacher asking me why I never drew fingers on people's hands and I said something like "because that's the way I draw them!" My very first instance of "that's my style man!"

    So funny.

    Superheroes primarily.
    My Sketchbook

And then God said, "Let us make man in our likeness and our image. Let us make him ridiculously hard to draw so that poor artists everywhere will have to spend 10,000+ hours failing repeatedly before they can begin to capture the form and likeness onto a two-dimensional surface." And there was man. And it was good. And artists everywhere lost their minds.

I changed the Symbolism a bit though..
You did a nice job, it's just a shame IMO that you didn't keep the same strong yet diffuse overhead lighting as in the image. You might be able to take those whites back with a sharp eraser though.
Who painted that by the way?

On topic: When I was in highschool, I wanted to be one of those Japanese Final Fantasy artists or ... Hyung Tae Kim. One day I read an interview with him, which I mildly hoped would give away neat pro tips or some secret technique of his I dunno, but the most helpful bit really was where he explained that he looked at a lot of art and always wondered what made good stuff so and used that to make his own better. At that moment I thought "if that's good enough for him it's good enough for me" and started trying to aim higher than emulating his lines and tricks.

I wanted to be able to draw something like the old masters. I was an unusual kid, I was fascinated by Goya, Rembrandt, Caravaggio and the other masters and could spend hours just looking at paintings.

I could say I've peered at Games Workshop artwork for over a decade, if it helps. It's got Dave's style all over it.
