Apparently Portalgraphics is releasing a version 5 this year - whether or not this will be for English (banner is in English stating release though) I'm not sure.

Wonder if people still care about OC, SAI kind of took the place as the lightweight champion, if they were smart they would take advantage of SAI's development being dead in the water and take clues from it like what the IllustStudio people did.
I still use OC because I love saving the playback files. For quick sketching it does get things done pretty well.
I'm curious what will be updated in the brush engine... definitely looking forward to new OC![]()
You can actually download the oc5 trial on the japanese page if you're really curious. I just got it and can't make heads or tails out of the menu, so can't really tell..
OC5 is purchasable/demoable now.
OC uses a brush smoothing/autocorrecting feature that is very, very similar to what PaintToolSai was notorious for.
Free transform is finally implemented. Standard ctrl+T shenanigans apply. Enter to get out of transform mode. (Wish it was double click, but whatever.) Transform isn't photoshop fast, but it gets the job done.
F10 is a client-only horizontal flip, which does not record the flipping action, but is significantly faster than the old ctrl-R flip, which basically had to redraw the entire thing.
Overall, pretty good, especially the curve smoothing. That was the only feature attracting me to SAI.
Tried the demo, seems more of the same, not much innovation.
I loved OpenCanvas back when it was on its first version, and I think its eventfile playback feature is its UPS. I downloaded its latest version's trial demo yesterday...tried it...wasn't too impressed(yet). seems not that easy to use and lots of superfluous interface (I like to keep things simple). However, this is my first impression of it, which may change with further use. I kind of wish that it has a feature that enables us to convert eventfile into .avi, .mp4 or some other video format though.
Portus, btw, thanks for letting me know about SAI, I would love to look into alternative painting programs (to Photoshop and Painter)
I too enjoyed the old original oC and still do occassionally, great for drawing with the buddies. I am interested in what improvements they have come up with in 5th.
one of my favorite artist use this program:
