First things first, though. Since this thread is likely *not* going to be a sight for sore eyes for a few pages, let's give your ears some great music to make up for your eyes' suffering.

To my own defense I'd like to state that I'd never have dared if my mentor didn't insist that creating a sketchbook was a good idea. If I may quote:

The first thing you need to do is set up a sketchbook thread in the sketchbook forums. Upload all your recent work.

So I have to obey... can't lose my guardian, can I? I heard people too embarrassed to post their own work are shot on sight on these forums anyway.

Okaaaaayyyy, I hear you. I'll shut my nervous mouth and start drawing.

Yesterday's exercises were:

~Draw your hand (20-30min)

~Draw your self-portrait (20-30min)

~Draw a male and female figure from imagination. Do not look at any reference for this. Draw them in any position you want. (20-30 per figure)

To find me where I stood.

Here are the results. Took a pic of my hand for reference too. None for my face, though. Firstly because perspective took a holiday on that one as I had a very bad and misrepresenting mirror and secondly because pasting photos of me on the nets is a big pet peeve of mine. Knowing there was no shot in hell I could pull off believable figures, I tried to focus on their proportions according to Andrew Loomis' "Figure art for all it's worth" p. 26 + 27 as I practiced it the other day and made a point of measuring when I finished and took the pic.

So sorry for the quality of the pictures - took them with my cell phone as I have limited options when at work, unfortunately. When I resized them, I tried to do something with the contrast but it didn't help much. I was already told that I shouldn't draw with anything harder than HB, which is the source of this problem...

Today's quickie. No time for more. Fried brain. Pushing 40 hours with just 4 hours of constantly.interrupted.sleep spoils the fun considerably.

Loomis for me today, an assignment from my mentor. Hope to do more, but glad I managed anything with how things were today at work.

Still, the night is young and I'm sure I won't get a wink of sleep, so there will be a lot of time to draw more.

Hello there! Looks like you might already know about Loomis, keep on studying as it's sure to help you improve quickly. Personally, I find if I do a page of doodles after doing a page of studying, it helps me see how much I'm absorbing from what I'm learning, but anyways

I'm afraid I might be at war... with my pencils. Imagine the horror: they refuse to get on the paper what I want them to. They openly mock me! THE NERVE!

Anyway, despite their fervor I managed to finish the assignments I've been given by my mentor.

-Read pages 1-24 “Fun With a Pencil”. Copy drawings from pages 12 and 14-24.
-Using this method, draw 10 heads from imagination.
-Draw the sphere diagram at the top left of page 21 a couple times. Draw through the form. Try to feel the sphere and draw it from different angles.

Now on to Kalin's challenge, haha

Heyaaaa, guess what?! MOAR Loomis today.

Bad day today... so just a little something I tried to get to feel form as my mentor says.

Your still focusing on the outline. When you draw think of the center of the object. When you draw the circle draw through the form. So if this was a 3D object imagine your pencil going around the entire form. Get a small ball and feel the entire ball. Be able to visualize the ball with lines going all around it. Put rubber bands on the ball and be able to see the entire rubber band without turning the ball. Draw the ball and draw the rubber bands all the way around the form, remember sit in one spot and visualize the bands wrapping around the form.

Still at a total loss though.

Hey I was wondering why you weren't posting any images in the other thread..you have them all here in your sketchbook! ;p
Some of those Loomis heads are looking great! I can see an improvement already with the first eyes you've draw with one you sketched further down on another page. One book you might want to check out is "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Better Edwards, that should help you to see forms better.

I'm thinking the grid picture you did is good, though the eyes are different shapes/sizes. I think it'd be easier for you to draw circles in those squares first (it's much easier to get two circles the same then realizing after you got your eyes nice and detailed that they're wrong.) That way, once you have the circles the same, you can pretend they're a lidless eye, just add the irises then finally the lids.

Annd, I think the photo study looks odd because the one you drew isn't at the right angle, I do that loads myself, but if you were to draw a line going down the man's face in the photo, you'd be able to see the angle better and thus be able to map the face you're drawing with more ease.
Anyways, don't get disheartened, since you're bound to have trouble tackling odd face angles. You keep up the studies you're doing and you'll find them easy in a matter of months.

Hey there!

I'm not very experienced in faces but the photo referenced portrait doesn't look too bad. The eyes look a bit long and as Naidy mentioned above the face isn't really at the right angle. The only thing I can recommend is that you should focus on the structure and angle of the face before doing any rendering/detail. Aside from that I really like your studies, they look quite awesome indeed.

Woot woot! Someone has been kicking some booty! Its only been a month and I see improvement!

To help with your circle drawings, or any type of line drawing, you should draw an imaginary line with your pencil first(so have the pencil a couple centimeters off the paper while you do this) Then put the graphite on the paper. Its almost like warming up to the line before you draw it.

I find it helps to keep my lines really loose when I'm trying to find and figure out the form of something. Build it up in layers and add more detail as you go. Don't be afraid to draw on top of your drawings as you're figuring it out, and don't be afraid to make mistakes!

Also, photo reference is never a bad thing as long as you don't depend on it. I like to sketch a body or a face, then look at a photo to figure out where the weakest parts of my drawings are, then do more sketches of those parts, then try the whole thing over again!

To be honest, Naidy, I'm glad I *somehow* managed. I know the picture looks all sorts of distorted, but it was more to see the placement of the features on the face. But yeah, I know the eyes look different and the mouth is way too distorted too. For whatever reason I have the hardest time to draw in pairs. Will come with time. I hope. But great advice on drawing the eyes. I'll be trying, thanks. The photo is a failure on so many levels... The nose and mouth are (somewhat) the right angle, the eyes aren't, the expression is totally changed, which is what I'm most upset about. Will have to see if that comes with practice as well.

I know I could have made a grid and copy the photo square by square, but that's not what I was after.

Last weekend I attended a still life drawing course, it was building upon the "Drawing at the right side of the brain" course that had I attended in mid December. Had great fun, learned a lot of things, had an invaluable chance to see how every drawing of the very same subject is just as different as every person's handwriting.

Not too fond of the hand. It looks pretty distorted, mainly the index finger, but my hand just does look distorted, I guess, even on the photo above. I do like how the feather came out. When I picked it up out of a box full of other items, there were gasps all around me "Oh, Gods, I'd never pick that, it will be sooooooo hard to draw." So like me.

Meet my leg. Another exercise we did to get to first feel perspective. I'm not too happy about the trousers, but I do like that I managed to make the shoe look shiny, because that's what it is. For your information, it's a leg from knee down. I know it doesn't look like it - the pants are way too lose and the shading not eloquent enough.

My paper steamship. 8) Quite fond of the shading, even though I didn't manage to preserve the "papery" feel. First drawing I didn't finish (obviously, but I'll return to that later).

Orange in a composition. Last half an hour I kinda felt like I was more hurting the picture than actually adding something.

After we as a group (didn't) finish the chair in a given time, our lecturer made an observation (she wasn't scolding us or anything, just a point) that we were a remarkably slow group. That we were quite literally cuddling the drawings. Well... I don't know if that's something that comes with practice or no, but apart from the orange I really did think I could use some extra time on any of the pieces.

We trained perspective with this one. The chair was on the table, so the seat was at our eye level. Come to think of it, pretty clever idea. The teacher also got pretty impatient with me when I was constantly arguing with her that eye level or no, I just *couldn't* draw it as a straight horizontal line from the right block foot to both sides and kept inquiring about an angle... then she just flat out told me to just draw it that way.

Had to tell her afterwards she was right, of course.

Now I'll fully confess that I *was* cuddling the tie. It was just soooooo beautiful, with all the folds and the arrangement we did with my friend... I just wanted to do it justice. Otherwise would you say that this is a three hours' work?

I have some more still life in the planning for the next week - tie again, scarf, keys (doh, I kept searching interwebz for metal references, then I just realized I could throw my keys and cutlery on one pile... blondes for the win!)... all for the portrait I promised for Kalin's group.
