I'm thinking the grid picture you did is good, though the eyes are different shapes/sizes. I think it'd be easier for you to draw circles in those squares first (it's much easier to get two circles the same then realizing after you got your eyes nice and detailed that they're wrong.) That way, once you have the circles the same, you can pretend they're a lidless eye, just add the irises then finally the lids.
Annd, I think the photo study looks odd because the one you drew isn't at the right angle, I do that loads myself, but if you were to draw a line going down the man's face in the photo, you'd be able to see the angle better and thus be able to map the face you're drawing with more ease.
Anyways, don't get disheartened, since you're bound to have trouble tackling odd face angles. You keep up the studies you're doing and you'll find them easy in a matter of months.
