Hello CA, first of all I hope everyone is having a great Christmas.
I think it is time to start working and practicing art with a more serious manner. I would like to be able to draw portraits mostly, even though I love a great deal of other work. I find faces faces so difficult to draw, so I would like the challenge of learning how to do them.

First post. A portrait of my friends dog I did as a christmas gift and some practice in fundamentals (which I want to keep practicing, because I need to)

Hi Halogen, thanks for dropping by my sketchbook =) I like your head studies. Where's it from? For the cuts to the side of the sphere, I always had a hard time thinking how much to cut, although Loomis mentioned that the width is about the distance from the centre point to the base of the nose.
Really nice drawing and rendering of fur in the christmas gift!

Thanks all for your comments. A little more here after investing in a moleskine for 2011. I wish I had more time to draw outside of my day job and general life stuff that everyone has to do. I really want to get good at this...I'm starting to get old

Hi halogen, since you're into portraits, I highly recommend taking a look at Betty Edwards book. It talks about using the right brain to draw to capture the likeness of faces. It's about drawing negative spaces.
For eg, when drawing a particular person's nose, you first abandon the thought that it is a nose but concentrate on shape of the negative space around it. By defining the negative space exactly as you see it, you are drawing the nose. This technique helps because to capture likeness, every facial feature must match exactly as you see it. But before beginning, make the proportion markings as accurate as you can, as a good construction is equivalent to half the drawing to done.
After reading it, I tried it on my value studies in portraits, you can see some in my sketchbook and I find it helps alot in capturing likeness. Do take a look, the pdf can be downloaded.

Some good animal studies (especially since I can't draw animals for toffee) but you need to practice facial anatomy and composition. As a lot of people would say, try Loomis (you can find his books on .pdf by googling his name). Other than that, keep on drawing and keep studying.

dsaac - Thank you very much. I will look at Loomis sometime soon I hope. I don't get much chance to do as much as I'd like with having a day job...well, day, afternoons and night job. Depends how my shifts fall with every rota.
Another page. A friend would like me to pencil draw a CD cover for him. That's why the wolves etc.. I know I am not at any standard for taking comissions, but I would like the challenge and practice..

Good start with the studies. Your pencil shading is already quite good. Proportions are a bit off in some of the faces so I would suggest you look up Loomis or some other books about head construction.

Hey thanks for stopping by! You've made a really good start, some great studies.
To answer your question, about three years ago I remembered that I really loved to draw. I'd spent the previous 8 years in various jobs that were tearing my heart out through my sphincter and I decided that if I woke up at 40 in that place I was going to kill myself and take everyone else in the F@CKIN ROOM WITH ME!!! I'm joking... Kinda. I've learned a shit load from this site though. The crits are usually spot on and just looking at some of the amazing work is really inspiring. Try your hand at a CHOW it's good to get a brief to stick to and you'll usually end up doing something that you wouldn't have left to your own devices... And remember drawing stuff is fun!

GEB - Thank you so much for your reply. I love drawing, but working a day job gets in my way...I really want out of that day job and I really want to do something creative for a living. Hopefully. That would be a dream come true. So yeah...I'm chasing a dream! I'm 27 next month.....so I wish I could hit down harder. Already gone down to part time work in hope that I can improve my art at a faster rate..

Tried to paint Yoda today with horrible results. Painting is really what I want to do. Maybe more practice in this area? I just seems to tire of using pencils all the time.

Hey Halogen, some great stuff going on here! I love the sketches in #12 and you have a wonderful rendering style with pencils.
On painting - it might help, since you're familiar with pencils, to do the painting in grayscale and then color with overlay layers. Also, I find it helpful to go hunting for old master paintings I love and bring their color feel into a painting from a photo so I don't feel like I'm just copying the photo.

Seili - Thanks for your feedback and tips...greyscale it is. I guess I should work that first to start getting a hang with lighting..
Another movie still. I think these could be a benefit in learning by looking at colour, composition and lighting..I have a folder full of them and they're fun.

Hey, wow, great improvement, and epic still!
One suggestion: in grayscale, you might want to try not using the blackest blacks or whitest whites except for small areas of accent where you want the greatest focus to be. When you go to color in Photoshop, you'll find that color can't be easily added to pure (or even almost pure) black and white unless you paint over it.

You're pretty ambitious to make a specialty of portraits - I've heard that human faces are the hardest thing to draw, since even the tiniest mistake is instantly obvious. Good luck!
Your painting could use some hard edges, that would make it pop out more. I actually liked it better in the WIP stage when it was less blurry
