Smile Evolution of Art - JeffBrown's Sketchbook

Hey guys, i'm fairly new here, been a member for about a year but haven't really been active since the past couple months. I'd really appreciate any constructive criticism on any of my pieces. I will try to keep them all labeled so I can know which one you are talking about. Thanks for checking this out, hope you enjoy. I plan on updating this often, so as per usual, newest art at the end.

    Edit:
Hey everyone, thanks for all the support. I'm now almost in my 5th month of the sketchbook. I feel like I have improved a ton since then, and I have increased the amount of time I spend on art by a ton. I can't wait to see where i'll be in another 5 months!
    -JeffBrown

Edit Edit: changed the main image to a more recent one, see if this attracts more amazing beautiful viewers such as yourself.

    First Update

Sketch from memory (no ref) let me know what you think, this was aimed more as a proportion and muscle study, testing my memory than it was a design, it is pretty generic in that context

    Update 2

Here's a quick environment, wanted to get one up and I decided i'm going to just do this sketchbook new, not using any past material.

Hey man great work so far, lets see lots more, I would focus on really building up your focal points in these digis even if its just with harder brushes and harder/more varied edges then the rest of the piece

I think you are getting too soft too fast as well but some people might disagree its just a style of working but sometimes i find the gradations get too smooth.

keep up the good fight ! look forward to more soon

Hey there! Nice start! And, I agree with the above poster, Zorcon, your stuff is good, you have goo solid bases, but alittle more definition wouldn't hurt. Looking forwards to seeing more, along with anatomy studies!

jbrown, good first couple of posts. it looks like you are really into environments. me too! though i am terrible at them.

how are your perspective studies going? among everything, i imagine perspective studies would be a top priority for those interested in environments.

    take care, and post more!

I like the start to your last environment - especially the atmospheric perspective element with the hazy pink yellow sky and the industrial theme. I'd love to see more of this image as you work through the process to completion. I'm new to working on environmental images myself, but love them. I struggle with the keeping the straight lines in urban/industrial images looking right. For this last one did you just lay in block shapes to start? Do you use the perspective grid feature on illustrator/painter?

Your enviros are looking cool. You should sit down and spend some time polishing something up. Like put 10+ hours and see where it goes. I think it would probably turn out pretty nice. Also, you should try to do some life drawing. It looks like everything is out of imagination, which is great, but your figures could use some work. Keep it up!

I'l try to post more as I work on it. the straight lines are an issue for me as well. I use photoshop, don't have painter so I don't know about that tool, but most of the time I make my own perspective lines on a seperate layer with the line tool. For blocking in colors, I use the polygonal lasso tool and ctrl-h to hide the marching ants then I fix up that part. If you stumble on another method, let me know!

Yeah man, you're definitely on the right track, its looking really nice so far. Make sure you add a single definite focal point and see if you can add color variation and intensity to that point. Its coming up really nice, there's just nothing to connect to yet. Keep it up!

The environment stuff looks pretty decent.
I think what needs improving is the figure stuff.

    Good stuff so far though!
