Here are some shitty sketches of a super fast gesture of my left hand which is anatomically wonk, and some girls expressing how cold they are

This is what I was throwing around in my head for this week's badass CHOW: the Viking Berserker.

After a bit of research, there's the more mythical were-bear interpretation of the berserker, some that claim that a berserker would kill a vicious predator (such as a bear) with their bare hands and wear the pelt and things in between. But on the whole, they were crazy warriors that would kill lots of people and would go into some sort of mental or drug-induced trance to do so.

Well, good start mate and good that you have started a SB. About the last piece check the shoulders of the warrior and make the hip size little smaller so that the figure will look more realistic. You may want to grab an anatomy book since itll help you a lot.

Hullo there! Nice start you have, my favourate has to be the first post, his nose is nicely done.

Like the berserker concept too! Only crit I can think of is it doesn't look like you did a basic structure plan of him first, it feels a bit odd to me. That said, I don't know what I'm talking about, so don't take my comment to heart if I'm wrong.

Anyways, good stuff so far, I'm eager to see more so keep up the good work!

Hee hee. Digital is not my forte.

Seems that every time I try to draw a girl, she comes out quite melancholy. Gotta stop listening to Feist and Fever Ray while I draw

Your pencil line quality is amazing! Kind of confused why you can't apply it digitally. Haha! Maybe you can spend some time figuring out the shape dynamics and opacity pressure for the brushes in photoshop. Find the feel that suites your drawing style.

wow I love that first pencil sketch. Digital feels very different from pencil, obviously, so I don't find it strange at all that the two mediums look different.

You have a good basic drawing skill, I think you can easily get used to digital painting.

Good work so far man. Your first drawing is pretty sick. I've been adjusting to digital painting to after using traditional mediums for so long, So I understand. It takes a little getting used to at first, but hang in there and keep practicing.

great traditional stuff, the anatomy on post 3 is looking off, bear and human parts, reference and imagination together would help. keep filling up the pages on your sketchbook .

Okay, I'm splittin' this update into a couple posts. Prepare for a spastic explosion of figure drawing

After this set, I was horrendously frustrated with how "contoury" I was being. My model then put me through hell with 10 second gestures which really helped free me up and to capture better proportions. That, and I was drawing on my moleskine, which is waaaay too small for a good, loose figure.

devastacio thanks for the comment and crit! i do tend to do do wonky things when I'm drawing male shoulders and hips. I thought it looked odd.

Naidy thanks for the crit! You're right on the money, I've been trying to draw my figures with no underlying structure. looks like I'm not there yet! Back to basics.

krenx thank you! I'll definitely try what you suggest. It's been frustrating, not being able to figure out how to replicate traditional techniques. Digital always looks so....digital to me *eww*

Sean McClain anatomy is a killer. In many ways. I'll keep practicing!

alamed yep yep, use it or lose it! I'm definitely feeling a bit rusty. But trying to do my best!

Now...for the sketchies.

There are a few things happening here (besides a lot of proportion mistakes) --I isolated one half of the body to try and work out the proportions of each section (my model is incredibly long, thin and tall, difficult to draw when you're used to boobs and curves), then I worked with drawing the skeleton from the figure, surprisingly successful! I kind of think that way; there must be a logical understructure for my brain to figure out how it works. Then some crazy 10 second gestures, forcing me to be loose, which I went back in and abstracted.

After that is a separate set of drawings from a different model, different build, ethnicity and style of pose. So hard to switch mindsets! Some more marker drawings, then a sort of "scribbly" gesture in colored pencil to express full figure. And ugh, perspective is difficult. I think I may have committed too fast.

Last two pieces are looking good! Keep doing more. If you are interested try 'Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life' book. It describes anatomy in a simplified way.

One more thing, in some of your drawings theres too much visual clutter. So its better to clean the dirty stuff ( lead marks, crumples etc) off the image so that they wont draw the attention of the viewer, unnecessarily. sometimes even im lazy to do it but its a good practice...

As for the clutter....I guess I wasn't too concerned with it in this case because they're just sketches. But you're right, it would be good practice to clean em up!

Check out some nathan fowkes and erik gist. It should help give you a visual base of where your work should go. You have something good happening with your drawings. Keep up the good work. Keep working those quick studies. someone already mentioned loomis, a good place to start from. Keep posting, often. It keeps you drawing at least.

I can see improvement. Your work is looking better. I would suggest keeping it up. As long as you do the work with improvement in mind, you always improve. Its also really smart of you to do imagination and mind. That really helped me to improve.

I can safely say you are wrong about this. Sometimes it takes to wok on a solid concept and more you check for flaws and restructure it, itll get better. This process may take time at the beginning but youll be fine when you gain more experience. so hang in there and keep trying. If one drawing goes wrong you can always do a new one

anyways about the new stuff here...The last piece is looking good. my only concern is her arms and legs may be too thin? just a thought. keep up the good work.

Now, this I agree on. However, I think what I was trying to say was I didn't hit the sweet spot in the base image, but I belaboured the possibility of a good product coming out of it until I pulled my hair out. I should have started over!

And I definitely agree with you on the arms and legs. She's a bit sticky >_<

Hey Kiwi, I like your last image. I do agree that the arms/legs are thin and even a bit long. It may not all be anatomically correct but it works well as a stylized drawing. All the the limbs are consistent in both length and thickness. I kind of like it this way.
