    D0ming0 de-lurks

    It's time to join in...

I've been looking at all the great art on Concept Art for over a year, but never had the bottle to post...until now. I had a number of pencil sketches in this thread, but after learning how the thumbs work I've removed them and put them in a new thread...sigh. You live and learn. Sr_5's comment relates to them (Post #4)

    Hey, welcome to CA!

It's always hardest to get started on everything but as long as you're gonna stick to it, it'll get easier. Every artist gotta start somewhere, right?

It's awesome that you're starting off with sketches. I'll go through few sketches so you can see what to improve on. Let's start with the first sketch of yourself: you can see that your right cheek is bit curved compared to the left one so to improve that, draw the right one like you did with your left giving it a symmetrical look.

The second sketch of the woman: the shadings on her body are frickin' gorgeous. Her neck is a little bit long and her head is small in proportion compared to her body. The best way to practice the anatomy is to just keep sketching and you'll get the general idea of what the anatomy looks like, which you just did with the rest of your sketches.

    Keep those sketches comin'!

    Some digital offerings

SR-5 - Thanks for commenting! Yeh, the face is not so good, too rushed but it was an experiment. Maybe a mistake puting it at the top, I'm already sick of it. Thanks for the compiment on the woman, and you're right about the proportions. I've got a habit of putting the pad on my knee at an angle. Everything looks great until it look at it face on....

Here's a something I've been working on. The rest of it isn't finished and is quite destracting so I cropped it and spent some time tonight on the face as I wanted to put something digital up.

After that, a study from the book "How to Draw the Human Figure" by Louise Gordon. I've had the book for a while but never paid it much attention. I flicked through it the other day and something clicked, it's really clear and the illustrations are nice. Hogarth and Bridgeman are excellent, but sometimes the style gets in the way for me.

Pencil sketches (used to be first post)

Some scans of sketches I've done in the last week or so. The scanner wasn't very kind to them, but you've got to start somewhere...

The first one is me, attacked with a grainy water blender in painter.

I did this study tonight, knowing it was going up here, so I paid a bit more attention than normal , the rest is just what I've been doing in a kinda half-assed way over the past week or so. I'm going to use this thread to inject some focus.

Comments are welcome. I am painfully aware of some of the problems here, but I hope to improve during these dark winter nights.

A wee update on a cold night...

Work, a cold and about 2 feet of snow (we don't really get snow like that in the west of Scotland) got in the way of the drawing this week

First, a 'from life' digital painting of some fruit in Painter. They were in strong sunlight. This took a couple of hours. Very useful exercise as you really have to LOOK at the colours. I had a hard time 'grounding' them on the table, you really have to pay attention to shadows, reflection and bounce light. I'm going to do more of this sort of thing.
