It's a good idea to start with b&w blockouts. The thing it helps with is especially to get an easy to read base. If the values work there, they usually work in the final.

In this case, I find the it hard to read though. And it shows in the later works.
Try to maybe reduce the values. The background could be one value but with different colors. Try to enhance the silhouettes, so the viewer can more easily see what is going on.

I like the atmosphere and colors you used.
