My name is Sami, I'm currently living in Hamburg, Germany, which is the most beautiful city in the world!


I am a very beginner, that means I can't draw at all
But I want to learn, so here it goes!

Great start! Might be an idea to play around with the brightness/contrast of your images when you put them on the computer to make them a bit darker!

Great start man. One thing I commonly see with beginners is what I call the "fuzzy Lines". Meaning the use of several short sketchy lines instead of making one long solid line. This will make you figures seem hairy because those short lines will read as strands of hair. Be sure to use long straight lines when ever you can. By pivoting your elbow instead of your wrist you will make it easier to draw straighter lines and curves. Keep up the good work man.

Today, I tried my hands on painting from ref I found on deviantart, but I still find it very hard to draw from ref in photoshop, a lot harder than sketching with pencil.
Plus, values still are very very hard for me.
Does anyone know a good step by step tutorial for this?

Keep up with those studies ; u ; I see some improvement from your first post to your latest, and doing more studies will help a lot~ Also try out some gesture drawings. They're very fun and help you understand anatomy and stuff! Keep at it~

Hi.

Just some tips:

For your gestures, try using Loomis to start out with. Your poses are very stiff but I can sort of help you out with that as you progress.

As for using Photoshop, don't yet. Stick with pencil and paper and Photoshop will be much easier to use when you get more used to your hand. Keep using Refs but go get yourself a sketchbook, 9 x 12 to start out with.

First question it comes to my mind: How old are you?

I suggest to learn some basic knowledges in perspective - it's a king of good painting and drawing, i think. And human anatomy!! Read books and practise.

Try to avoid "chicken scratch" lines.

Well,yes want to learn the basics. Right now, I'm attending a presemester of Illustration, but next year, I want to go to Berlin to a Game Design University, thats why I try pushing Photoshop. Makes my application look more professional.

The topic of the application comes out on Febuary 28th and I have time for it until the 16th of June, so I really want to learnt digital painting, at least the basics, before that!

Ah, btw, can someone suggest books for anatomy studies? I can see a lot of anatomical sketches in other sketchbooks, I think that is what I needed. Work through a book with heads and bodies, what do you think?

well... no offence, but i thought you're 13-14 BUT it doesn't matter what i think.

I reccomend to you:
All books from Andrew Loomis (human drawing, basic anatomy), Joseph D'Amelio - Perspective Drawing Handbook, Burne Hogarth - Dynamic Anatomy

And check out Dynamic Figure Drawing DVD by David Finch from The GnomonWorkshop.

Watch calssical paintings and try to copy what you like (colours, comps and so)

Why are you looking at going into a University already? What do you want to do in Game Design? How much a semester is it?

It's the only University in Germany thats not private for game Design. I don't know what I want to do in game design yet. The Uni offers a artist-line and a game-designer-line, between which you have to deside after 3 semesters. They don't want 100%-artist-off-the-hook but preferably creative people, thats why you don't have to hand in a portfolio to be accepted, but they give a one to two word topic (last year it was "tunnel" and the year before it was "empty house") and applicants can do whatever they want, e.g. a movie, write a song, draw a picture, a comic, design a game or anything else.

And I am looking at going to university because I am 20 and it's time to do so
I know I have a LOT of work before me, but I am willing to go that way. I was always very very lazy, thats for sure.... Well, no time for being lazy right now!

Honestly, you're just starting out. You have LOT of work ahead of you, so much that most people will burn out before they even learn 1% of everything that art has to offer. Even jumping into painting before learning the basics of perspective, composition, and creativity of drawing is a bit maddening.

Not here to discourage you at all, I'm glad there are people here like you that want to jump head first into art and learn everything at once, but you should learn the basics before you go somewhere expensive.

Hello again. When your drawing a figure, break it down to simple geometric shapes first before you add bulk to your figure. Think in 3 dimensions. Arms and Legs are cylinder shapes; Head is an oval shape; The torso is a barrel shape etc. Somelar has mentioned some great resources. I'd highly suggest looking into those.

glad to see you starting a sketchbook on here man. We all need to start somewhere, and anyone who is willing to work can get better!

I suggest checking out Villpu for learning structure of the body and form. Trying to practice different parts of the human body and learn how everything is proportionate to other parts. For example, practice heads, so you learn that the human figure tends to be 5-6 heads high (unless you're drawing models or heroes, than it's around 7-8).

Once you get that down, you'll notice a significant improvement in your figure drawings

Your figures still look stiff. I recommended doing hundreds of gestures instead of just focusing on the outlines. Also, get some tinted grey paper and work with the darks AND lights.

Another good exercise is to draw with your left hand.

Make sure to draw everyday.

I am planing to do so. I got my hands on 3 Bridgman books this mornings and ordered them on Amazon, I hope they can help me, plus I got 4 ebooks this morning, one is about the head and 3 about the body.
Unfortunatelly, I had no time today to read through them, I will definetely start tomorrow!

Honestly, you should start working on the skeleton before you go full blown clothes and all. Get Loomis' "Figure Drawing" book and try out some of his skeletons/reduced human forms before muscles/drapery/skin.

You need to learn the form above anything else when drawing a person. Building crap ontop of crap will just come out a lot worse than crap ontop of awesome.

Do 5 pages of gestures with the help of posemaniacs and Loomis mannequin, one-inch each. It helps amazingly.

Hey, nice to see your breaking your figure down to basic frame. I assume your looking at an anatomy book for reverence. The size of the box shape and the length of the arms and legs are a little off. Draw as precise as you can. Take your time. If something doesn't look right, fix it.

Hey guys!
Long time no post, I know. Christmas days and family stuff distracted me and made me lazyyyy. Plus, a lot of my friends who study abroad are coming to visit right now, so I'm trying to see them all, too...

Anyway! In my class we're doing a poem-illustration atm, and I asked my teacher if I may do sth digitally, because I want to learn it, anyway.

I needed a top view of streets, which I then want to be overgrown with plants and they should look run down and stuff, with then monkeys running all over it.

This is my start, I don't really know how to continue with it, does anyone have tipps for me?

I did it with a lasso tool and then filled the forms. But now I don't know how to make it look less sterile and stiff.... It doesnt really look like houses....

I just noticed that the feet are half cut and this is annoying the hell out of me, but I've worked on this from 9 to 12:30 (yeah, quite long, I know ) and now I'm pissed and have to go to uni anyway.
The shade is missing, it's suppost to be the shadow of a monkey (same poem )
