    Mooglesarelittle's Mathematical Sketchbook

    Hey guys,

I opened a sketchbook here around a year ago but due to other commitments I wasn't able to keep it going. I'm giving it another shot though as I'm currently focusing on speeding up my painting process.

With that said and done here are a few I completed this week, any crits or tips are most welcome!

I really like your work here, especially that first piece. I've always wondered at the tips/tricks of digital painting and 'speed painting'. Any pointers you could give a fledgling artist when working with programs like Photoshop/Painter to get these kinds of effects?

Ebrown I would recommend purchasing the Jason Chan Quick Sketch video from Massive Black. It doesn't cost very much and it has by far been the most helpful to me improve speeding up my painting

There is one branch on the first painting that looks as if its coming out of mid air, you could flip it fairly easily.

Otherwise, I think everything looks pretty good.

I would love to know what program you're using for the speed painting, especially the first. Care to share the brush you used on the rock?

Great works, I like how you use color. Couldn't open the last sketch, maybe link is broken?
    Keep it up anyway

A couple of quick and dirty sketches today. Two rough character sketches alongside two landscape studies reference from google. The girl cocooned in the tree is an oldie but I've yet to post in anywhere.

Oooo! I love that tree creature/girl. And you've inspired me to start doing some speed sketches/paintings. I really need to do that. Especially with environments. (Where I lack the most.)

Schen, Thanks! I'm finding really quick (30 or so mins) environment paints are a great way to kick off a day of painting

    EBrown, Thanks man!

Only a single image to update with today. I'm following Malakuko's example by painting film stills. Faces have always been a weakness of mine and I spend most of my time working into an image until I have a good likeness. This took around an hour, hopefully you can tell who it is (referenced from google).

Small update for today. I thought my portfolio could do with a girl of the tank variety. I managed to get it to a point I was happy with until I realised I hated it and scribbled all over it T_T, so it still has a ways to go. + Voldemort being totally badass

I decided I wanted to try and push the last wip shot I posted to a polished level. I originally began painting this girl months and months ago with the intention of creating a character portrait in vein of Dan Luvisi's character portraits. There's still a lot more to do but I think I'm making progress, any crits are welcome!

Slowly making progress! Her right hand is giving me a headache. I've tried capturing my own hand for reference but I can't seem to get it to look natural.

Wow it's been a long time since my last post! 2011 has been a pretty busy year for me so far which means I haven't had much time to work on my 2d stuuufff.

I've been studying Feng Zhu's techniques he discusses on his website, which I'm finding really helpful . Completed the attached image in 3-5 hours. It's meant to be a big evil research facility in the middle of the deadlands, with a big sword wielding hero type guy coming along to do big sword wielding hero type things.

Spent the afternoon working on this piece. I was going for an epic, Final Fantasy Omega Weapon boss battle sort of feel. Pretty rough in a number of areas but I'm happy with the overall image.

A small comp of some sketches I drew at a character/life drawing class. Sadly the scanner didn't pick up enough line detail so I had to enhance them using the usual Photoshop tricks. Plus, a quick portrait of the female character from the Gun Girl painting.

Nice Sketchbook! I really like your last character painting. Liking the rougher style, the eyes are only a bit weird (maybe too far apart). That character drawing from post 20 seems like a lot of work! I really find it hard to put a lot of time in 1 drawing...

Wow, great paintings!! Your polishing ability is fantastic. Your anatomy, composition, and colors look really awesome, too. I especially like the assassin girl, and the environments in post #21 and #23. One small thing though - between the sketch of the lava environment and the painting, something happened with the perspective of the main two white streams of lava. I think they should have remained completely straight as you have them in the sketch. If they are at slight angles like in the painting, that it messes with the perspective of the whole thing. It's a really great piece overall, though.

Keep up the great work! I'll be subscribed.

mitchmoo: Thanks! The image from post 20 took a ton of time, working with a rougher style is a lot more fun

    RedOwl: Thank you

Another boss battle image! I think I moved a little too fast on this so there are a fair few points which could be improved upon but I'm happy with the overall image.
