Cow Lady the Games Student's Sketchbook

Hi! I am Emma, and I study Games Design at UCLAN! Go here for more information: http://www.gamescourse.co.uk/main.htm

I'm 19, I love games! I love art! I always have done and therefore want to work as a games artist (Dream) but will probably pursue a job in design.

Please look through my sketchbook at my struggle for improvement, I'm sure you'll find it amusing! And please, go apeshit and rip my work apart, I like to keep myself grounded.

    Here's my blog and deviantart:

Good start! Don't be frustrated that you are not "set in a style" yet. Your style is a part of you, I can already see some of it, and the honing of it will just come with drawing more. Keep up the work!

    Hey there,

Welcome to CA mate and seems like you're onto a good start. Im not the best person to provide constructive criticism but will try to provide my honest opinion.

I like your color use but you may wanna learn more about lighting since most of your work appear somewhat 'Flat'. Usually people start off with Andrew Loomis books, so may wanna give it a try. But i hope you'll find more text regarding lighting.

Good that you have started the anatomy lessons. Keep it up. that knowledge will pay off in the long run.

keep posting daily and practice hard so that people will get to see your work frequently. Hopefully you;ll get more criticism from experienced artists in the future.

    Best of luck!

Thankyou! Yes, I find lighting quite hard, especially when colouring in Photoshop. Up until 3 months ago I had only used traditional media (Mostly Acrylic and Watercolour) so I'm finding the painting in photoshop just as hard as learning everything else on top Thanks so much for the advice Your work is amazing!

Don't worry about getting a style. You'll end up with one, everyone does. Just try to look at your work and keep the things you like, and change the things you don't.

You've got a nice eye for landscapes. I think you're landscape sketches and paintings are your best work here. You should try doing quick 5 minute still life drawings at the beginning of a drawing session, or when no ideas are coming to you. It's a good way to loosen up and to improve descriptive drawing.

Your sketchbook is looking good, I like the studies, and I like your ideas. Remember, just keep pumping um out. The more you draw, the better you get.

ps. Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.

Wow! Thankyou so much for this advice! I will take all this on board, particularly the 5 minute life drawings! That's a good idea.

Yeah I've discovered since painting in photoshop I've been finding landscapes much easier - from reference at least, not really from the top of my head!

Hahah! Yeah I'm known as the 'colour kid' in this part of town

Sometimes it's so tempting just to sit on Maya all day! I'm learning Max aswell, which is just the same really but simpler. Somebody said I should learn Zbrush and I was like Pffffffft. Maybe in 3 years when I'm free!

Your use of colour and composition is good. I recommend studying perspective and anatomy a bit more, as an advanced knowledge of both looks good in any portfolio. Life drawing is always a great way to power up these techniques.

    Once again, good stuff!

@Ultarant Thankyou so much I will work on these from now on. I've been doing a lot of work on Loomis but lack of scanner is seriously bumming me out

@SamC Ahhh I can't believe you just said I had potential You're amazing!

My course is great but a lot of the work is self driven. A lot of 3D too xD But it's definately one of the best games design courses in the country! Plus Preston's MP is against the rises so that might have some influence on the prices?

    Here's my course's website: http://www.gamescourse.co.uk/

The human heads are looking better! Two bits of anatomy info that were real game changers for me are that the eyes are exactly halfway down the head, and the elbow terminates at approximately the lowest end of the rib cage. The forearm and hand in turn go down to about halfway down the thigh.

Sorry if you knew all that already.

The colour looks good, and you have the contrast down. The tunnel terminates too soon however, and needs to go more towards a point on the horizon. Thankfully a bit of redrawing and airbrush work should be able to fix that without too much trouble.

    looking good.
little feedback on #22 would be that the breasts need a bit of work. the position and shape are rather off. I took this from hogarth's book, it should be a rather useful trick, maybe you could use it
