A story thats been going on in my head for this painting not sure if I'm aloud to post it? but I think its part of the WIP

As the Earth’s minerals deplete and its resources dwindle, man begins to search for new ways to find energy sources to sustain life. Scientists create a warp gate that bends time, then they send trained specialists back to prehistoric times to try and find a way to bring back anything of use. Horrible creatures attack the first team sent through the gate, and the team’s leader shuts it down to save his people from these monsters, trapping what was left of his team back in time. After escaping the horde of monsters, they begin investigating caverns for mineral deposits. There they witness things that were previously unknown to their generation, and they soon come to a harsh realization. These are not just caverns... these are the homes of the vicious prehistoric creatures- violent brutes devoid of any rational thought. One by one, members of the team are picked off until only one man is left. With only 3 shots left and no other ammunition, he knows his struggle is futile, but he still clings to the hope that he will prevail and save his people.

I am not pleased, just didn't want to drop out so did this. No chance I'll make it through obviously but whatever. I just seriously could not make more time to be able to do anything to this piece, it was going to be a painting with more than one figure but school has been too busy.
I guess the only thing that really annoys me is I wish I could've at least shown more what I am capable of, oh well, maybe next tc

finally got this done. i had to rush near the end, but i like how it turned out. learned a lot on this one
i need to do some mechanical studies. the suit design is generic and bleh. ill get those in after tc100's over.

Crits! Hopefully it's okay to post it on this thread. Just my opinion, and I hope I'm not too harsh. (From last post to first)

lancer_idenoure: The creature looks great, but the figures don't look quite as polished. I think if the guy holding the dagger had his helmet off it might've been better, because then you could've played/showed some emotion/fear in him. I wish you weren't in my pool because I think you're probably in.

Nyctalgia: Haha yeah the dick piercing does seem really painful. I like the angle/perspective of how we're seeing him. It makes him look more powerful. One thing that bothers me is the bone armor, it really doesn't seem that useful. The armor on the chest and on the upper arm don't look like they stay on too well either.

hunchback: I love the texture and brushes you use, I always recognize the style. To me, the piece doesn't look that finished in some parts, like the lower body and (stage) right side. The legs are drawn really low, making him look like he's really hunched over.

lilnebo: Wish you could've had more time to develop the concept! The (stage) left upper arm looks a bit short, and overall the pose looks a bit stiff. I think a problem is that it's just a straight-on front view. Change up the pose and bend the knees too for more dynamicness!

Tadas: Woo one of my favorite pieces here. Like the composition and colors you chose. To nitpick, the center figure's head is kind of tilted and her hip also juts(sticks?) out unnaturally. (In the steps it looks more natural)

xinranliu: Another one of my favorite pieces. I also wish you weren't in my pool because that probably leaves me out now. Hehe . The figure in the background, why does he have a bow and a spear? Where are his arrows then? Just a random nitpick thing... Great piece!

pokepetter: Like someone mentioned on the other thread, it does look quite similar to another piece you had done before.. I really like the harsh lighting on the shoulder, in the steps it looks almost like 3D. I think the dagger could be exchanged for a better weapon? It just looks puny compared to him. I think someone said this in the other thread too, sorry haha

EpicKey: I like how it's tilted, it gives a kind of chaos-y mood to it. (Haha I know it doesn't make that much sense...). I think there's a lot of unnecessary space in between the figures in the foreground and the bridge. Maybe some overlap could've been used? That's just my opinion composition wise. Both of the figure's hands also look abnormally big. The guy who's getting stabbed's helmet's perspective looks a bit off too.

skMOP: Your's sucks and needs more contrast.

OmertA: Very dynamic! I do think that a little too much red was used. Maybe a bigger gun? Because it looks especially tiny in his hands. It's a shame that you didn't show more of that gasmask after you did that excellent study on it.

Andrew Sonea: Glad you added those last minute colors, because those definitely went a long way in helping that piece. I think maybe some more folds to really emphasize how tight the material is would've been nice, near the legs especially where there's almost no folds.

Eddieee: Polishing the faces would've really helped, and the two animal skulls on their spears are facing in the same angle which makes it look repetitive. The lighting gets mixed up sometimes, like on the shield, it doesn't look round, it looks like it goes in on some parts and doesn't look very protective. Overall, the piece does look very true to theme.

Piemonster: Another favorite. Everything is really well rendered and the pose is really dynamic and moving. It looks like you spent more time on the guy in the suit though than the savage. The savage's (stage) right foot is twisted really awkwardly, in a way that doesn't match up with his knee. Also on the (stage) right, his pec(I don't know the technical term haha) looks like it's connected to his arm, and doesn't match up with his chest anymore. Something about the eyes are bothering me as well, but I'm not sure.

zelda_geek: I think the background is kind of weird, because the robot looks futuristic, and the figures look prehistoric, but the buildings look modern. The robot looks like he's just firing randomly, it might've been better to make him focused on one part.

P: There's a nice mood going on in the piece, and the snow and background are really done well and simply. Both the figure and the horses legs however look too short.

thanks, skmop. yeah i had to rush the people pretty badly so i could get some sleep. and i agree with the no helmet thing, its just that the other guy had his helmet off and i didnt want both...i probably could have had one of theirs just super banged up and broken...damn. i know almost nothing about mechanical stuff though so that prob wouldnt have gone well haha. damn i need to do some studies

P: i think your saturation levels and overall lighting are really good, it could just use some more reflected light from the snow. and some of those lighter trees could be even lighter. the upper anatomy is good, but like skmop said, their legs are pretty short. aaand it wouldve been nice to see a little more definition on those severed heads :]

zelda geek: the lighting on the background is really good, but the people in the foreground look too dark. you couldve added some lighter tones to define them more. as for the robot, you split the light and shadow right down the middle. it looks like the light is coming from the upper right so there should be some light on his right shoulder guard thing. and i think you could have made the glare from the guns a lot brighter.

piemonster: skmop pretty much covered up the anatomy bit. though the hand holding the axe is positioned funny. it looks like its correct anatomically, but thats not usually how people hold things. you have his hand bent forward. take a stick or bat or something and look at the angle of the wrist and the forearm. its bent backwards a little(or straight). uhh trees look rushed and i think we both need to do some mechanical studies... as for the eyes, you have him both widening them and lowering his eyebrows at the same time...which is quite difficult to do. make them squintier. Looks awesome though man!

eddieee: like skmop said, the lightings a little inconsistent. pick a direction and stick with it. even with diffuse light like what you have goin on, light is still directional(it just bounces around a lot more...i think(im still learning )). also, in diffuse light, there usually isnt rimlight like what you have on the main guy. it also looks kinda unfinished. oh, and for those flecks of...stuff, heres a pretty good explanation of how to make them look good (i havent tried it yet though) here. its about third comment down. hope that helps

andrew sonea: haha skmop saved me a lot of time. everything he said, and then it would help if you had some sharp edges. just clean those up where you want things to pop and it would look a lot better. also, the glow from the guns should have a much smoother fade out. they just suddenly stop and it looks clunky. does that make sense?

omertA: skmop saved me some time again. watch out for using too much red and turn down the saturation a bit. i think it could use some brighter values too. and maybe have the alien thing swinging the staff back like hes preparing to swing. looks almost like hes just holding it. other than that it looks great!

skmop: ahaha thanks again for all those crits you did i have problems with screen brightness too :/ not really sure what to tell you. as for your piece, i agree you could use more contrast. i had a lot of trouble with that too. your proportions look really good, just work on muscle definition. studies are our friends!

epic key: i have the same exact problem man :/ anyway, i like the colors you used, its just oversaturated in some areas. and reflected light from fire is more of a yellow color like in the center of the flame. and i think the figures could use a lot more light values to make them pop out more. reflecty highlights too, those would look good. and you can never have too much blood splatter

pokepetter: ...goddamn dude. that looks sick. it does look like you used a 3d model though....did you? either way, it looks sick. i think the background could use some abstract shapes though, instead of a gradient. also, the blood doesnt look quite like blood. and this is more personal opinion than critique, but i think he needs a bigger weapon >:]

xinranliu: i REALLY like the colors you used. overall lighting looks good too, its just a little flat in some areas. not the forms, just the actual shapes of color (let me know if i need to explain that better). also, i think the way the guy in the back is holding his spear is awkward. i feel like it should be slanted towards him instead of away. it helps if you pose out your poses before you draw them. and then their clothes could be furry-er. good stuff though man!

tadas: the temperatures on this are amazing! i think it could use some more saturation though, especially in the ground. and the same thing skmop said about her hip, its sticking out too much. for her other leg to go on the other side of the horse, her crotch would have to be like 2 feet wide O.o and just like P's, your horses' legs are too short. fix that stuff and sharpen up some edges and youve got yourself a NICE piece

lilnebo: neboooo! dont worry, high schools a joke! teen challenge is more important! ;( i know what you mean about time though, ugh. as for your piece, your anatomy is lookin better, just his left forearm and legs are a little long. that and his torsos a little thick. i know its super rushed, so im just gonna say your values look like they wouldve been good if you spent more time on it. its a good start. sorry you couldnt spend more time on it

hunchback: i really like how your stuff almost glows. it just the values almost didnt change since the first block in, you just changed the colors. it would look better with lighter values on the rest of his body and more of a background. i like the concept though! good stuff

nyctalgia: i still flinch every time i see this...that looks so UNCOMFORTABLE! same thing skmop said about the armor, it looks really loose. also, your values are flat. especially his skin. there should be some highlights on it that are almost as light as the sky (if its direct light). the trees look pretty blurry too.

me: stop cheating with the hue/saturation tool!!!!! slap down some colors in the beginning!! TEXTURE!!! practice reflected light! finish on time! and for god sakes...do some mechanical studies. gotta step my game up for the next round! again, if there were an emote with flaming eyes and a fist, it would go here!
