Back from dead

Was trying out the Painter. But even my superexpensive computer couldn't handle it. Was lagging so hard!

Line quality is improved best by visual perception increase. I'm only speaking from experience btw: what I mean by visual perception increase, is basically a statement saying, "the better you get, the softer you draw". That saying goes well with, "the higher you get, the more humble you are".

ehem. Ok, to the point... Increase your line quality by simply drawing with marker, pen, or any other tool that doesn't require erasing or backtracking. While doing that, Focus on perspective, and draw 1000 boxes a week (no seriously, do more if you want also).

These three things will increase your line quality over time.. try it within a month and see (if you have time- that is). Try it. I'm only speaking from experience though. Might not work for everyone.

hmmm, studies, tryouts, imaginery stuff, ref stuff, color theory... sweet, keep on doing all theese. I like your dedication. Think about your presentation as well. Try to find some cool layout for your studies and your work overall. Avoid messy puzzled uploads when they are dealing with the same subject, like for example anatomy studies. I guess you've got the idea

Brushed the dust off my acrylics. My first ever painting.

Conclusions:
- Trying out something new, choose easy object
- Pure black color ruins the picture
- Need to buy smaller brush
- Shouldn't I better start to learn oils, are the acrylics good?
- I love that acrylics dry fast on paper, so I can put on next layer easily
- I hate that they dry fast on my palette too

Dude I've been thinking about trying to use some real paint too. When I first started this painting stuff I tried oils and it was a really slow process but acrylics seem like they're a lot faster since they dry much quicker. I'll keep an eye out for the finished product.

Lately I want to draw all the time, even during my job time. Feels so good.

Loving my new ink 0.2 pen, for the first time I start to like crosshatching, but still must learn a lot, until it will look good




Finished the indian. So many frustration and mistakes, but learned a lot, I think...

And yesterday evening spent some hours learning to shade and blend with acrylics. The red ball is a huge mistake, only in the end I noticed that highlight is so wrong. But after that tried the grapes and felt good

Really nice ink studies !!! And good to see you are posting more regularly; with sketches from imagination as well. I need to do those too !
I would recommend you watch out for proportions as well as form in your sketches. That is all... keep drawing

Hey fenixx , that's great that you like some of my stuff! I hope I can keep up with the regular posting, not an easy job. And thanks for the crit, I'm fighting with the proportions for a very long time. Can you please tell more about the "form", I think I don't understand what it really is, does it mean that I need to think more in 3D when drawing?

Did chest studies, at first from anatomy book, then studying refs. Learned a ton. Sorry for quality.

Enviro studies again.
Tried out new brush for the 1st one, was good for sky blocking, but not for everything else, feels blurry.
For the 2nd one returned to the good old brush made by D.Rapoza

Hey !

The pectoral studies look great !!

What I meant by form is, drawing while keeping the solid 3D form in mind. You know, cylinders, boxes and such. I do see that you use that in you drawings here and there. Do you use Michael Hampton's book ? Ever seen Vilppu videos/books. If not, take a look at them, highly recommended.
When it comes to proportions, I still struggle. I guess the best thing to do when we are starting out is to deliberately take time in making sure they are right. Maybe not measuring it inch by inch, but at least making sure they look right.

Your environment sketches look nice. The snow one came out good, but the other one's colors are too soft and dirty. But I see you are already aware of this. I recommend you use the same approach as you did for the snow painting. Also check these blogs out. Very inspiring for environment painting. LINK LINK Notice how they use bold values and strong outlines. Mostly working on 100% opacity.

Fenix's advice really nails it, when you do those drapes or anatomy drawings
i cant stress enough the importance of directly following it up with trying to replicate it from your mind. that is how you learn the fastest.

Your studies are getting better real fast. There's a whole lot of improvement on this page alone. Your imagination stuff is somewhat weaker, but that's quite understandable, and I'm sure it'll get better as you go.
I don't know what your approach to drawing is, so feel free to ignore what I'm about to write if you already know that. It seems that your problems with proportions arise from the fact that you seem to be drawing a detail at a time instead of attacking the entire image at once. So maybe you draw the head, detail it, and move on to the shoulders and so on, instead of getting the entire pose and gesture right first and then working on the entire character simultaneously.

fenixx! thanks for clearing out the form question, now I know for what I have to work more. Didn't knew about Hampton book, I'll try to find it. Also I have a lot of Vilppu videos, but have seen only a little, if you are telling me to check them out, I'll do that! And you dood have much better proportion skills than me

Rafal Dorsz, you are so right about drawing detail by detail, not the whole drawing as a whole. It's a bad habbit from childhood, I'm fighting with that real hard For example this car I started from back to front, and it's proportions looks awful.

I agree with Rafal too. Maybe you need to do a light gesture pass first. Vilppu has these steps that he suggest we use while doing figure studies. I don't know the exact order, but it goes something like this. Gesture, Proportion, Verticals, Horizontals, Diagonals, Curves and Negative Space. You don't necessarily have to go through this on all sketches, but what might help is to realize that you can work on passes. First, a very loose and light gesture, then checking the proportions. Then trying to solve the boxes, cylinders and such. Then getting to finishing with render.

You can even do the same approach when working on something technical like the car. A loose block-in, setting the perspective, checking proportions, verticals and so on. In this way, all the mistakes you can make will be done in the beginning stage and its easier to fix. Although you have done lot of work to render that car out, the perspective is off and it shows through.

Environment studies looks good. Again, try to be more deliberate with your strokes and take your time.

The environment study looks really nice now. You surely are getting better at it. As critique, I would say that the grass brush(?) that you used in the dirt area is ruining the whole look of the painting. Its kinda making the whole surface look unusually dirty. I would in fact suggest to stay away from brush like that for something like that and do some blocky strokes to suggest grass. You are getting the hang of the colors, which is great

Interesting sketchbook, a lot of good anatomy studies + naked peoples. INTENSIVE stuff! I like that.

You may work a bit more with your values - especially in landscapes.

I dont know much about landscapes, but i dont think you get things out of texture brushes when you are new to this. stick to basic ones and use large brushstrokes.
You can imply grass with large strokes and values. ( what fenix said )
