    Smile Milad's Sketchground

    Hey all,

I've been a visitor at ConceptArt Forums since quite a while, but this is my first actual post. I'm starting this thread to upload my traditional works and sketches that I'll be doing on a daily basis, mainly to receive constructive feedback and criticism for improving my skills.

On a more important note, this thread was born as the result of a deal between me and my pal, Sharon J. So this is literally a 'race' between us two, to see who improves faster, and who gets 'there' quicker.

Here's an excerpt from our chat
MiladThaha: so here, shake me hand

    how about this?

    i'm gonna compete you

even though i'm wayy wayyy wayyy wayyyyy behind you, i'm gonna come running

    ~evil laff~

Sharon J: ooo, and i wont make it easy at all >

    MiladThaha: uh oh

and i dont want your sympathy

    YEAH!

    Sharon J: its a deal!

    MiladThaha: lets roll!

    who am i kidding

Sharon J: hell yea! lets kick some art butt! xD

    MiladThaha: duh

    who am i kidding

no way, i wont let my doubts come through

    WILL BEAT YOU

    someday :o

MiladThaha: i have a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way to go

Sharon J: so do i!! the journey never ends

and neither do i want it to

    MiladThaha:

    its like this

    i'm on page 1 of mindcandy's page

    and you're on 30 or 40

    Sharon J:

MiladThaha: but im SOOO there x)

    ~snicker~

Sharon J: yea, but its not like i'm sitting around at page 30 or 40 either B-)

    ~eats snicker~

    MiladThaha: hhahahhaa

    Sharon J:

MiladThaha: i'll only know when i up my work though

Sharon J: make sure you dont bog yourself down with my awesomeness

    MiladThaha: no way!

    Sharon J: i'll b uploading a lot more now >

MiladThaha: i may get blind, but that'll only be momentary

    Sharon J: hehehe

    MiladThaha: ouch

    same here

wait till i get my scanner >

    Sharon J: bring it on!

    MiladThaha: HELL YEAH!

Sharon J: xD i'm so off to draw!

    And so it begins.
At the moment, I consider myself a straight beginner, no doubt. I will be frequently uploading my images for viewing. I may experiment with different media but will be mostly sticking with pencil.

Currently, I'm a student of Architecture, but my heart always rooted for Animation and Art, and I intend to pursue it as my career. I have a really long way to go though, I'm just starting out

    Thank you all!

    NSFW, NSFW!!!

A bunch of female torso studies. I never got the hang of drawing their hips and breasts, so been doing them for some time. Referenced from movies, magazines, comics and reference books. Most of them were stalled moments from movies, and had their clothes on. I just imagined what would it be like when its nude; with the help of anatomy books though.

I must say I think I'm improving my female drawings though, used to be horrible before this. Plus I noticed I need to work up my line control. Thick lines for women don't go very well

Its now when I started to properly draw the female body, did I begin to truly appreciate and be carried away by a woman's beauty and graciousness. I never really concentrated on how the curves on her body flows to conjure up a deadly beautiful and saturating figure.

I was so involved, so into it, that it kinda knocked me out for a few minutes. Nevertheless, here are my newer studies.

hey good to see you doing studies. you look like youre really taking your time to get the shapes down and have really solid line work.
however in your work from imagination, it looks like that sense of focus is gone. your line work then becomes overly scratchy. when you work from imagination, try to remember the shapes you drew in your studies. try to remember the feel of putting down that smooth line, how much thought it took to do it, THEN put down a line with confidence.
one thing that helped me a lot was to draw with pen. you can just use a cheap ball point bic pen cause then you wont care if you lose it and you can buy them in bulk. since you cant erase you really have to think about what your lines before you draw them. it builds confidence in your lines.
also try to put down a line from point a to point b in one stroke. dont worry about getting it perfect. buy some cheap printer paper to practice on

Hey mate, good start! I loved the hands most so far.

Practice more on faces though because I see you're doing the simplistic toony thing, at this stage we all need to learn more about faces and by making them cartoony we don't think about their form or proportions as much!

Anyways, keep up the good work and I hope to see more soon!

    Thank you bro!

    @ryan
What you said is very true there. When drawing from imagination, I tend to draw as fast as I could, because MAYBE I think I want to draw as much as possible. There are these very few rare times that I blow my head off over the drawing. Also what you said about using a Ball pen is a great idea; but usually I tend to challenge myself to not use an eraser. Thanks alot for your comment mate!

    @Naidy
Yes, you're right, I haven't worked much on the physical side of the face though,, been doodling all the while. I thought I'd get my other more expressive elements first (the hands and feet) before I look at the whole picture. I will definitely do faces from now on. Thanks a lot for your comment Naidy!

Don't ask me, I really don't know what I drew. Did both out of frustration; probably cause I was so used to drawing from reference, drawing from imagination was pretty much a challenge. I don't really like what I came up with.

Heyy, whoever said you couldn't draw?? these are really good!

We used to do this drawing exercise for a few minutes each day before starting work in toonz.. Take a rough paper, draw circles on it, all over the page, overlapping each other, anyhow, lotsa circles. Then we'd draw lines, horizontal, vertical (from one end of the paper to the other).. Those really helped with getting those circles right (useful for character construction in animation), and I guess they did help with improving line quality too.. You could use old notebooks too for that..

And hey drawing from imagination would take time..
    ***

Well, that was how far I got to typing the reply before you posted the latest upload. You need your butt kicked for over exaggerating how bad your drawings are!! >:/ look at how the hands are drawn, you've got them right! well in the meowmonster one they look great!

The cowboy guy looks a lil unbalanced, but meh.. you're improving a lot, breakneck speed

Yes, sometimes its so frustrating that when you have the thing going on inside your head, but doesn't seem to pass to your fingers; grrr, its a very hair tearing experience. Like your nerves just stop working altogether

Yep, I too feel the cowboy is a little unbalanced. Looks like he's about to fall off to his left.

I'm going to strive for faces next, that's one area I'm still stumped at. Especially female faces.

    Thanks for the comment, Sharon!

Nice studies man! Cool figures, figures are hard to draw. My tip is just to keep drawing them a ton and try to think of everything as basic shapes. Everything can me reduced to boxes, cones, pipes and spheres. Not that I have mastered it or anything, I still struggle with it.
    Keep up the good work!

    Thanks alot guys! Much appreciated!

I used to be a 'basic-shape-construct-thingy' addict too, but then, I started forgetting the details and how an overall form comes out in the long run D: It's an awesome technique when you're starting out but somehow starts messing up in the end Maybe just for me though. Thanks for dropping by!

I like this thread! There's already an improvement in the lines for the female studies (as you rightly pointed out, uniform lines and sensuous curves don't quite match)

However it looks like in drawings from imagination (like the last one with the woman and the monster) your lines aren't as good as in your studies. e.g. the right side of the woman's torso (near the monster), her bum, her leg - your lines have reverted to short overlapping strokes. I do that in sketches too, but since here you went over it with a pen might as well be confident and lay in one whole sinuous stroke. After all you already have the pencil to guide you

Thanks alot for the comment mate! Thing is, I'm not very used to drawing well with a pen, and I wasn't confident enough to draw it even after I drew in the underlying pencils. I'm still practicing on it though.

More sketches! I played around more trying to make a better character design for Meow! Monster xD I haven't fixed on any designs, but would love to hear your opinions!

As for the other sketches, one's a crazy humanoid alienoid combatanoid thingy that defies the rules of believability set by human anatomy xD. And the guy is something I cooped up as fast as I could, trying to heed krysjez's advice, and used a pen with as few strokes as possible to avoid that scratched look.

Didn't get much time to upload anything new, been quite busy with work

    Everything's from imagination

EDIT : Thanks for name 'Meow Monster' goes to Blueberry
