K's Paintover-Critique Thread! :D

Ciao a tutti! =D

Stealing the idea from Hannes and Jana ( )who again stole it from Steven Stahlberg ( ), I'm now making my own paintover thread! I've followed Steven's thread for years and even had my own painting overpainted by him once or twice, but never thought my own skills adequate for something like this... Well, I'm not near as good as him even now, but I hope to learn a bit in the process, and if it's fun AND helps someone = win-win!!!

So... Post your WIP images in this thread, and I'll paint over them, (trying to) improve them! =) It helps if you want to work on something specific, such as lighting or anatomy, please specify this.

Well I'll go first! This is my entry for the Gotta have a hook challenge on artorder. The details can be found here. The biggest problem that I've realized this has is that while I did a lot of thumbnails to work out the action and pose of the dwarf and the hook, I didn't really pay much attention to the environment, and as a result, it looks sorta pasted there, which takes away a lot of the dynamic qualities I honestly think I achieved in the figures rather well. Other problems of course is that I'm not a great painter (this is oils) and that I don't have a lot of knowledge in color, so the painting itself is rather dull.

I changed the frame too since I think the image "pops out" more from a black frame (but that may be just me)
Play with edge-value contrasts to make objects in the foreground pop out, at the same time maintaining a consistent fall of light and light color so it doesn't look too pasted.

I am really interested on how would you take this painting of mine, I was aiming at realism with the light and values... the perspective is weird on purpose, I thought it was funny. Thanks a lot for doing this.

@Serpian: you're welcome I just figured out the attachment download, I just need to add a .jpg ending to the file (that is called "attachment") then it works.

@Christian: This is what I would do, just pushing values a bit more. The perspective looks cool, so I didn't really change anything. (but I'm no expert there, either)
Also made the folds more irregular - totally regular folds can look unnatural.

Tryed to give it some colouring and added some extra stuff.
There is a few problems with it. I think it might be to dark but something else is wrong and i cant see it (other then the psyrealistic feel )

This is my personal best so far but I'm pretty sure a lot of things are wrong with it, so go nuts.

I'd say excuse the anime nose, however it's mostly carried across by line instead of form so I'm wondering if there's a better way to paint it without going into uncanny valley levels of weird. D:

Your colors are too saturated for a night scene allover - imagine that night adds a dark, foggy veil over the entire scene, then the streetlight (or moon, or whatever your lightsource is) will illuminate some things nearby, while everything else is rather muted, dark, low-contrast.
Since your light source gives light of a pale green color, the highlights also have a tinge of pale green.
And since it's the sole light source, and a strong one at that, it will create a dark, deep cast shadow.
Also, there is no depth. Practice using values to create depth, look at Claude Lorrain's landscape paintings for an example of this. As you said, a part of the sky is probably too dark, but also the big ceshire cat smile is too light - it competes for attention with all other elements in the image. I darkened it to keep the focus on the girl.

I assume you want to show effects of two light sources: the moon behind him; and another light from below, at least the shadows of the face suggest this.
I tried to push that effect a bit further, making the bottom light source weaker - so it is still there, but the moon's effect is much stronger.


Well, I wouldn't mind some more threads like this! It's pure visual education. I learnt so much from Steven Stahlberg, Hannes and Jana!

Someone mention the lightening is still a bit funky and I can use some help. Props to Jason Rainville earlier for helping me on the anatomy on this guy. Thanks for making this thread.

Seriously, man, this is good. It doesn't need "fixing", it already works. All I can do is suggest a few changes that also work. But I think it's really a matter of preference.

I agree that that minotaur is good, but there is one nitpick thing that is really easy to fix: the hands don't really do it for me. It's easy to take your own reference photos of you or your friend holding a stick, or even just look in the mirror, to make the hands have that little extra that really sells them.

I have a hard time figuring out what's going on here... Is the figure to the left a giant, looking at a small person at the right; or is the latter looking small because he's further down? I'm also guessing he's supposed to have human anatomy. But the left figure, is it an alien, or do you want it to have human-like anatomy? Is it supposed to be on top of a rock (?) or behind it?
I "corrected" the anatomy a bit but since I don't know what style you're going for, see it just as a suggestion.

Thanks for the correction! it was for a challenge with the theme "underground", it's supposed to be mole people vs. a giant caecilian. So he's not quite human, but he doesn't look very mole-ish..He's supposed to be scared of the battle beneath him and the corpse of the soldier the caecilian threw at the cliff. He's not giant, just closer. I guess i didn't manage the perspective very well. So anyway, it's supposed to be a battle scene. Maybe it would've been better if I left the guy on the left out and just showed the fight..
