Requesting assistance

Hello peeps,

I finally decided to start painting digitally and today I got my Intuos4 in, I don't know where to start.

The whole thing feels alien, I know how to operate PS(photoshop) I've been doing editing stuff on it for 3-4 years now, but with the tablet, I have no idea what was going on, I thought I could draw lol...

So what I want to know is, where are the basics? I tried googling, no tutorial or anything for beginners, so I'm at a loss here.

Well, if it's mostly about trying to use the tablet, (since you say you already know some Photoshop,) then it comes down to, well, getting used to the tablet... You'll probably have to practice with it for a while before you get the hang of it (I know I did when I first tried it.)

Yes, the drawing experience is a little weird at first, because it feels like you're drawing with a normal pencil or brush except that the actual drawing is happening on your screen - so there's this disconnect as you draw over here, and the picture appears over there.

One thing, though, check your tablet settings and make sure they're set up in a way that's comfortable for you (and works with your screen.) This isn't part of Photoshop, it should be somewhere in your system preferences (System Preferences - Other - Wacom on Mac, I'm not sure where on Windows but probably the same place your mouse settings are.)

Also, if you have a tablet with buttons on the side somewhere, watch that you don't accidentally put your wrist or elbow on the buttons, or you'll press buttons at random and weird things will start happening. (I do this ALL THE TIME. I'll be painting away and all of a sudden it zooms in and I freak out... and then notice I have my elbow on the "zoom" button of my tablet.)

If you painted traditionally before, painting digitally won't be too hard for you.
It's just a bit different but you'll notice this as you play around with it. It's just a matter of getting used to.
