My Sketchbook! updated [9-6-10]

Alrighty here is the almighty sketchbook of Alex Clark. Tell me what you think! Be honest okay? I NEED to get better. A lot of these are done in around an hour. I am new to the digital media all together soo any help on that would be great.

One more sketch (from imagination. This skull was pretty fun to draw actually.) If you wouldnt mind you could also answer if the colors in this picture are complimentary, I have no clue on the color theory.

Hm... It seems you're just starting so I'll just give you a few directions to consider. First of all, it seems you have a lot of stuff you like to draw, so it would be a great idea if you find pictures of those things to help you draw them more accurately. Google is very cool for this. Next time you draw a skull for example, find a picture of that to help you draw it more realistically.

Second, pick your favourite subject, animals, people, buildings, plants, anything, and draw 5-10 every day. Not digitally, but with your pencil. I know digital is so cool, but you have to become a pro with traditional media to be able to draw good digitally too.

Another thing you should do is try to study colours. Use pictures (again), to try and duplicate the colours they have. Do one drawing everyday focusing on that.


Make a schedule, and try to keep it. If you're willing to put the time into it, I promiss you you'll get better so fast you won't believe it!!!

Im not a complete newb. I had some practice with the traditional media in art 1 last year. heres some stuff from that stuff, not all of it though.

School for me starts in 4 days, so I can really practice with my traditional media then, sketching and drawing people/things from my everyday routine.


As for the colors, should I practice them now? Or once I get everything looking good without color?

Did another sketch. This time of a person! . I did use reference but it didnt turn out ANYTHING like it. Any comments?

Well that's a great start, as long as you have the ambition to improve!
A coupld things about the portrait:
the lines are scratchy - endless life drawing practice will give you the confidence to draw long sweeping lines instead of short, messy scratches.
The anatomy/proportions of the face are off - spend as much time as possible practicing drawing the human skull, as well as the planes of the face (look this up, there's lots of diagrams), and a figure or head drawing book's section on where the parts of the face go. After you start to really understand what's going on underneith the face you are trying to sketch, you'll be able to do really fantastic portraits. But of course, don't forget to practice the full figure, as well

@ Saramel I have done a little work on a skull - Didnt want to post it simply because I dont think its that good and I dont have the lower jaw or teeth done. I should have something done tonight, hopefully some full body pictures. But I will have a bunch of stuff traditionally done by the weekend =D. Cant wait to post some stuff again..

Did some 3D work, really starting to like it.


I still need work on how to render something properly and make awesome stuff but I am working on it, any comments on how I can make the stuff better?

You should do some still lifes with a pencil :3 it will really help you improve, i'm about to do some myself :]

I'd honestly consider just forgetting about doing drawings from imagination right now since it doesn't teach you anything, it's more of a review on how good you are at the moment and where your strengths and weaknesses lie (think of it as an art exam!)

If you are really intent on drawing, spend the bulk of your time drawing from photos and things you see around you, and if you want to get creative just make sure you're looking at real stuff to give you a good idea on how everything looks/works.

Either study everything at once, something you find most difficult or something you draw alot. Then when you need a motivational boost, draw something from your imagination using the skills you've learnt and, depending on what you found the hardest and what you found easiest, you know what to study again! And so on and so on.

Just remember to try and learn something new everyday and do life/photo studies as often as possible and you'll improve before your eyes

Hey there, I'd have to agree with Sulphur, to draw from things you see.. specially still life, simple things to start getting the hang of values and then moving on into bigger and more complex things.

Other than that, practice some anatomy..., if you don't have the books, search on google images, things like "human anatomy" and try to draw what you see, that'll get the idea of muscles, where they go and how they affect each other into your head...

Keep practicing, that's the key

I have been doing some sketches in school . I will post them when I have time to scann them all, got my scanner working. So doing some more sketches tomorrow and hopefully scanning something in? The stuff i've done so far is in pen, need to do pencil tomorrow.
