MetalFingers - Thanks for the feedback man. Maybe it has to do with the mechanical device being an outdated design but I'm just analyzing and copying everything that I see on that device. Maybe there's something I'm not seeing. Appreciate the insight nonetheless. Cheers mate!

kingkostas - Thanks mate! Always a pleasure hearing from you!

M.Calza - Thank you and thanks for dropping by dude!

Joe777k7 - You're most welcome man, anytime! Loving the positivity!!!

Here's something I was working on in between semesters; the Nostromo Crew from "Aliens". Unfortunately I am too busy with school at the moment to take it to finish but I will return to it as soon as I find the time.

With this one I mainly wanted to focus on my line work, values and composing multiple figures in a single frame. It's basically a highly developed thumbnail for an illustration.

Wow man! Awesome work!!! Lot of those facial features and proportions are dead on man, really like what you did! Thanks for the comment in my sketchbook again! I think that might be as far as i take challeneges though that i did for IDW. I cant really paint and add too much light to objects yet so cant really do like a final rendering of anything i draw hahahah I really wanna be able to draw form well right now. Like stuff like scott robertson does. Or like all the work you see coming from the first term at FDZ school hahahahah perspective perspective perspective!!! hahah Keep up the awesome work man!! Cant wait to see more!

Thanks for the comments, man, and I totally agree - I'll be doing reference studies from now on before I start a design. Your SB is great. I have no crits, as you're much ahead of me at the moment, so I'll just keep checking out your page for inspiration and advice from you. Also your figures have such good construction/style/gesture to them. I try and get that same quality but it's quite difficult to do. Great stuff.

    Hi matey

Thanks for the SB visit! I really appreciate it and the comments, I like the still life up there a ways thats rather nine and has a good feel to it especially the light.

I rather like the anatomy studies too, but I had a long hard look at the soldier types up there and the clothing, and I can see what you are on about with the folds etc.
But I will say they wont pass parade with kit in that state!! LOL wait till the seargant Major gets hold of them with creases like that!

hee hee thanks again mateyy and all the very best to you.

Hey man, studies are looking great. I really like how elegantly you are able to note
poses in your figure/composition studies. Values and colors are looking good...maybe
try being a bit more aggressive with darks and saturation.

On your creative pieces I just wanted to mention a couple issues that I think I'm
    seeing repeated throughout:

One thing is that I would try to trust your roughs a bit more. In a couple pieces
your strongest versions were a couple steps before the final. You are kind of
over-polishing. Polish is good but you want to do it selectively and purposefully.

In general I think the main thing missing in a lot of cases is a dynamic balance of
    the artistic elements
. There is too much similarity and uniformity.

Aesthetic and composition both are going to be driven by dynamic balance and variety.
Repetition is good, unity is good, but uniformity gives the viewer's attention no way to
digest the image. In the same way, equal balance kills the sense of motion or priority.

This same applies to all the elements: line, shape character, scale, edges, texture, value,
saturation etc. You want variety and dynamic balance, or as Kostas put it, dominant and
    sub-dominant.

Treat each of the elements like you would a value study for a painting like
Loomis talks about in Creative Illustration

    Name: Abstract+Squares.jpg
Views: 168
Size: 27.9 KB

    http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/20...anization.html

Or it doesn't even have to be that complex...think yin-yang or big-medium-small details.

The other thing is don't kill yourself rendering and detailing every inch of the image
to the same level. Compress your effort in the same way you compress the viewer's
attention: toward the focal points. one object in a series to full detail, then just allude
to the others...knock them into the background and just keep the pattern going.

Your doing tons of work man, keep it up!

    Oh, almost forgot:

Kostas posted a link on his SB to a really good article on the subject of dynamic balance
as it applies to details and scale.

“When forced to work within a strict framework,
the imagination is taxed to its utmost – and will
produce its richest ideas. Given total freedom,
the work is likely to sprawl.”

Bludhund: Thank you!!! You're spot on about my tendency to over-polish, making everything even and not pushing my darks and saturations are far as they can/should be. Excellent feedback and thanks for posting the Gurney link on Loomis! I need to be reminded of the bare essentials constantly.

    Lupre - Thanks! Come again.

KingKostas - Epic dude! Thanks a lot for the paintover. I see your point. Adding those textures in there makes an important difference.

    Lanotdesign - Thanks dude!

Just wanted to say you are growing and improving really fast man.

I can see those gesture/pose studies have really paid off in #291. These character sketches look really good,
elegantly laid out, have a real sense of stance, and a nice balance of variety in the textures. The line quality
in that Total Recall development is excellent, very engaging to the eye. Really like those painting studies, the
simple color and value breakdowns, great stuff. If anything at this point I would say keep in mind elements of
functionality; things like range of motion, scale, thickness of materials. That and definitely pick apart those
painting studies for ideas on how to unify color schemes and use them to create mood.

Keep it up dude, you've been working really hard for a long time, now its turning into momentum.

Bludhund - Hey man, thanks a lot! Always a good feeling when I get that kind of response from someone whose critiques I greatly respect. Having the momentum I have now is an amazing experience!

    exekrialase - Thanks dude!

    Some recent work.

These weapons were designed for char classes from the same universe that the War Chief char (#294) exists in. That universe will be furthered fleshed out throughout the remainder of the semester, maybe even longer than that.
