Don't forget Hurricane and Luness. I think a lot of this has to do with what artists choose to post. I bet Chuckmate and a couple others do great pencils too, but mostly just show final, digital images. Didn't Tensai post some incredible figure pencils once? Or was it charcoal?

kinda annoyed by the whole digital is real easy thing. measurinng? uh wut. never done that in digital. How do you do it? Its not like every child who picks up a tablet is like jesus or something. There are noobs and there are masters, and by the way speed is relative to the artist. there are traditional artists who can draw fuckin fast ( cough wes burt cough) and there are artists who take forever in there work ( im loookin at you velazquez!)

digital! slow ( Ruanjia this guy takes a month to do a painting but fuck is it worth it)

so please stop raggin on digital just because some deviant art douches are saying they will be the next big thing cuz they know what colour dodge does.

Auslander, hunchback and Randis: You are right. I find it helpful and fun to watch this kind of stuff. It wasn't meant to say "people who aren't listed here or who don't post pencils are bad artists". I think there are many others who would earn 6 stars for their "digital only" stuff or oil paintings, sculptures or photographs. It was my humble wish to find more eyecandy LINEART stuff, because it is MY focus to learn to describe the form and drawn objects/bodies this way.

Well it's undeniable that digital is easier than traditional, but they have their own strengths... Uncle Mullins pointed out that digital could be compared to free speech while traditional would be expensive speech. He basically said that because one has to "pay" (canvas, paint, brushes, expensive watercolour paper, the risk of failure, etc) to create a traditional piece, it is more valuable than digital art.

Also Velazquez painted alla prima.

Computer hardware, tablets, Software packages like Adobe PS, maya, 3ds max, painter cost a lot of cash and you will spend more on upgrades and updates over the years.

Drawing on paper is easier than drawing with a tablet.
This whole digital vs traditional thing is pointless, most artists do both anyway.

I can relate. It almost discouraged me from drawing in Starbucks. Some guy in a nearby table one time was like "HAHAHA I DON'T NEEDZ SPEHCUAL TABLETZ!!!11one" and I was like... I was just drawing, yo.

Guess I got issues with the phrase "negative shift" from your original post. "Stylistic shift" would have been more accurate.

I believe I understand your intent...it's rephrasing CA's chief mantra (my version): "Stay away from motorcycles, at least until you get the training wheels off of your bike", i.e. stay in lineart world until people are practically begging you to move on to color.

(Good advice that should be universally applied, like "Don't drill superdeep oil wells in the Gulf Of Mexico until you're 100% certain you've got all the bugs worked out of your regular drilling"

)

Now that we have toys like the iPad out there in eager young artist's hands, expect a tidal wave of "motorcycle crashes" in the near future...DeviantArt is probably going to have to add another Petabyte of storage space...

I added the last recommended Sketchbooks.

Let's take it easy: My english isn't as well as I want it and I didn't want to annoy anyone who doesn't post pencil or traditional stuff .

My opinion in the first posting was meant to communicate my intention - same reason, why I post in every sketchbook "please post more pencils". I am just asking for the stuff and I don't want to annoy people here. Auslander got it right and I called it "negative" because I would label it negative for myself to stop drawing in lines and change to a whatever other drawing-steps-method which doesn't contain the traditional stuff (even if that would be only presteps to a digital thing). That's it. As Randis wrote: Many may do both (traditional and digital). But maybe it isn't just posted because it's positive procrastinated work (not to scan and post and to choose to draw or do more important things in the same time). So let's stop the discussion about right and wrong, black and white - we know all, that there are greyscales. Just post the pencil Sketchbooks, if you know some and if you want to post them.

seems somehow that this thread is not about "traditional vs digital" but more about "Pencil vs. Paint" am I right? well at least people argue pro/con digital by using arguments counting ANY Paint, digital or traditional....strange

As far as I know it digital painting has pretty much the same rules like traditonal oil paints have for example.
And as far as I know digital is no way easier than traditional. Traditional media can be more time consuming but I don't see any "time-difficulty-connection".
To be honest, who the fuck decided that an undo button makes things easier?? undo buttons and seperate layers are cool but they don't teach you how to paint, they might save you some time if you screw up (actually only layers do, you don't waste that much time if you paint over a wrong stroke compared to pushing the undo button).
I definitely see that drawing with line includes some "problems" which simply do not exist when painting with "big" brushes and color, but what the hell does that have to do with digital media??
Again, seriously dudes, your arguments, the way you present them, concern ALL Painting mediums, and do not refer specifically to digital. Does nobody else notice that?

I actually would say that digital is undeniably easier in many regards. It is better for making changes and undoing mistakes. It is better for details (just zoom in). It is easier to apply various textures.

I continue to draw with a pencil...sure it's a digital pencil but I still do a lo of sketches. and I make it a point to sketch my images out rather than just blob down paint and carve my images out.

I have been following this sketchbook for a few years now, I believe it was the first sketchbook I ever saw here, too. It was also the reason I signed up to this webiste, so I could comment in it

GIlead's Fantasy Art Sketchbook, there is 100 pages, and it is definitely worth it to go through all of them. I respect him and is work a lot, and I think it definitely deserves a place in this thread. Also, it's just an awesome sketchbook to look through

This is a good idea, in general I think we all have a tendency to only wanna post the best stuff we got, more rough pencil or pen sketches would be nice in a lot of sketch books.
As for the digital vs traditional debate, I find the wacom pen is still a bit unhandy compared to the cheapest pencil. And you can't even tilt it much! But when it comes to digital vs traditional painting - how can anybody argue that digital is more difficult???!!! That's nothing less than absurd!

Have you guys seen Odd Nerdrum's compositional sketches btw?? Doesn't look much different than childrens drawings at first glance!!

I am not against digital. I am searching for what is possible with pencil or charcoal. And I am amazed what some guys did with only these tools.

The forum got many sketchbooks with high level pencil skills AND high level digital skills (e.g. Randis). The very interesting thing in pencil and charcoal stuff is the "non overpainting". Help lines which aren't erased on paper can be a very well helping guide for other guys. (Maybe they see the negative space or stuff like the containment system of the hand before the fingers of the figure got separated.)

I added also sketchbooks which doesn't contain pencil, but charcoal.
