    Casperamy's Sketchbook

    Hello All!

I have been lurking around CA for a little while now, it looks like a really cool place with lots of people who are willing to view/crit people's work. So I thought I would start a Sketchbook.

This first post is a few hand studies from Bridgeman and Hogarth. I have trouble with hands and hope to improve in the coming months!

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Chris

    Studies are always good.

understand how those forms interlock and have patience.

Thanks for the comments Msegal! I hope to get a good foundation in drawing before I attempt figure drawing/painting digitally. I will be doing these studies until I am comfortable!

Good studies. I reccomend that if you get bored with a certain body part to start studying onto something else just to break the ice.

Another Hogarth hand study...think I jacked up the thumb!

Does anyone have any good sketchbook tips? I mean like positioning of the paper and how to hold your pencil/pen etc.? I find myself kindof scrunched up over the page which is affecting my linework and control. I am used to working at an easel and am having a tough time transferring those drawing techniques to the sketchbook. I like to draw with my whole arm...obviously with a smaller sketchbook that is tough!

    casperamy, nice form.
I like the flowing gesture lines
that give it a natural form.
If I am not mistaken is that Bridgeman?

I agree with Msegal about learning how the
forms interlock. its pertinent to your success.
I still have quite a lot to learn too.
keep up your studies, maybe do some studies from life
    if you can.

I tried your skull on first post as a reference with an HB pencil and printer paper, if that matters( I wouldn't know). So please stop by my sketchbook and critique it.

Another avid Burne Hogarth fan I see. ^^
They're excellent studies but be sure that you're thinking about his thought process and absorb his philosophy on drawing while working. I'd like to see some conceptual figures next.
Hope to see some more soon.

Nice hand studies and inner lines. Keep up the studies, and focus on form at first and details later.

Thanks guys! I am going to try and keep at working the hands for a while. I think I am starting to understand a bit more about their construction.
I figure if I do one or two a day I might progress, I need to start working from life though, or maybe some good photo reference. Does anyone know of a good source for hand references?

I did this one today, another Hogarth study, in prismacolor pencil, no smudges, but harder for me to control and stay loose.

Great update. I think the best source is your hands or maybe the hands of your friend's or any person's close, you know.

    Hello again!

I decided to move on to do a few head studies today. I hope to get a good understanding of the structure of the head...kindof like the hands.

very nice hand studies, I've yet to try hands properly, as they look very hard to draw realistically...
