Advice on some landscapes.

I started a new thread for a few landscapes to avoid confusion between the older paintings so apologies for polluting the forum..

I am making 2 or 3 sea-themed paintings to be framed and mounted on a wall next to another.

So basically I could use some insight in the following issues: Composition, Color, Values and masses. and what ever comes to your mind.

I made a few changes and some refining to these and unless you find something seriously wrong about them I'm calling them done (since it's a birthday gift, the deadline's tomorrow anyway).

I 'm thinking that they will be printed to about the size they are in here watched from a 21" screen or so.

I like the compositions, but maybe you should use more photo references to impress more natural look

I used some reference but perhaps I should have used more accurate and more suitable to the situation. I guess these are what you could call painterly/cartoonish, but I kinda like them that way.


next time I'll do a landscape I'll check for good reference beforehand and not during painting. Thanks for the tip!

as mentioned above, I would like to add that your dark areas are kind of pale. Don't use blacks for the shadows. Combine dark blues, purples, reds. This will produce rich darks. You are missing atmospheric perspective and everything has the same contrast. Closer to us is always darkest and has highest contrast and as it fades it mixes with the background.

It was a bit of a struggling with the shadows and in the start I used some very dark blue and brown colors for the shadows but they seem to have gotten lost in the process.

I tried to lighten the further areas a bit but I guess I didn't make enough contrast, I'll see if I can improve it since it seems I got some more time to finish this afterall.

the one thing that really is bugging me is there are really textured areas, and then very flat areas. You should really try and unify the piece more, with similar textures all throughout.

But could clarify a little like pointing out the texture differences because I'm not quite sure what places you mean, the sky, rocks, sea?
