    mokou draws

so! i'm pretty nervous about this as i've always lurked CA and have such an amazing respect for all the artists here, but i've finally decided i want to make a sketchbook thread.

my side-goals keep changing, but my main is always the same... get better at art and express my thoughts through it

im hoping by finally making a sb thread i can get some serious crit on my work, get a more realistic view of my goals, and connect with other people with the same goals as me or who have been in my place before. so yeah that's me! without further adieu...

umm, proportions aside (my biggest weak point) i've gotten a pretty good simple value system down pat with these markers. fine in the core shadow with %50, base/reflective/whatever shadow 30% , punch in the darkest darks with 70%

Nice, expressive lines here. You look really timid with that 50% gray; I think those sketches would improve if you loosened up a bit with that.

Would love to see some stuff that's more rendered stuff as well.

    Martell.Joshua - thank you!

Tom Fenton - thanks :') this was really nice to hear, it keeps my head high about my art. i'd love to be able to work on some sorta franchise thing someday haha

Ikage- THANKS!! i am such a fan of your art

    - Thank you!! Can you explain what you mean by timid? I can definitely do more rendered stuff. like digital paints i know how to do, but traditionally that's my weakness and something i'd like to look into

    Sorry I wasn't clearer.

What I mean is: Your core shadows in those marker sketches appear as though they were drawn either very slowly or with a lot of tiny strokes — the kind that give pen or pencil drawings that nasty look of being hairy — in contrast to the lines elsewhere in your work, which have the look of being confident and spontaneous because of the apparent speed and fluidity of motion with which they were drawn.

Because of the contrast in line quality, at first glance I find myself focusing more on the core shadow than on the features of the face where I should be looking.

ahhh... i didnt know what to do here, i guess i gestured a storyboard from the scene in kiki's delivery service where her mom gives her a new broom. as you can see i sorta lost focus and made the panels bigger and bigger?? it was an interesting practice, i'd like to do more

read pretty much every post on http://sevencamels.blogspot.com/ ...mark kennedy's posts are golden. he is a really swell guy and you should make some time to read what he has to say about design in drawings

    michael hampton

michael hamptons figure drawing book is really excellent. it totally takes out the ambiguity of vilpuu gesture lessons and explains what exactly he means by "feel the movement". suddenly i realized that theres different masses balancing against each other. (the 8 parts) the flowy, repetitious asymmetrical lines are describing that balance. i'll be spending this week trying to get a better feel of that balance-flow in figures

side note: permanent markers are fun to draw with. theyre so bold!! and a bit smelly

Nice stuff!...and nice linework. You are way farther along than when I applied for animation (albeit I went to Ringling for 3d.) I love the style of the characters as well.

SO! still studying michael hamptons book and drawing my bro whenever i can. i thought i'd share a "neat" little thing i do that helps me figure out the gesture of a figure. it's a kinesthetic thing.

the body is a balancing act, and that's one of the things i try to represent in my gestures. depending on the lines i use, it represents a certain "tilt" of the mass... when i'm drawing a figure, i actually use my hands to figure out what this tilt is. i pretend im holding the line that represents the mass of the figure, and tilting it to figure out its direction.

just a little something that helps me anyway

oh posemaniacs. how i loathe the so. decent for warmups, but not much different from flashing any series of pictures at someone in succession and making them redraw them (imo)

You need to go see that llama farm, I'm curious as to how you would draw them. Additionally, I'm curious as to why (when doing posemaniacs and others) you do the opaque color behind the frame? Good stuff you have here though, keep using your brother as a model while he still works for cheap!
callouses on the fingers. If you don’t have any, you’re not drawing enough.

thanks Quasi-almost! i've been stuck inside so no llamas as of yet : (

the color is just a thing i do because hm.. i dont know really! i like the look of toning, i guess. i do them after all my gestures are done, just to give them a bit more punch. in the simple gestures its a way to add some volume, in the more extended figure draws it's usually me finding the core shadow then splitting the light into just white/black

if that's what youre asking, i mightve read the question wrong :X
