DaemonMagus, just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean they're old... there are bands that aren't on MTV. and usually, they're much much better.
Where do you guys hear about all these bands? As you can tell, the only bands I know of are/were either on the radio or tv... I am musically challenged...
-Insert intelligent comment here-
For me, I had a cousin who turned me onto punk music... and since it was before the internet, I just bought albums that i hoped would be good. Lots of good surprises. I started going to shows when i was 13 or so, usually they only cost like 5-10 bucks and they were a blast. Riding the metro into southeast DC at that age was nuts. I spent my teenage years spending almost all my time/money on music, and I met a lot of cool people this way.
Now that the internet is so prevalent, you have the ability to check out a lot of underground bands... look up some of the bands that people listed here, there's plenty of web presence for them. Download a song or two, then order the album if you like em. There's so much out there that doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Children Of Bodom - Bed of razors
Children Of Bodom - Lake bodom
Children Of Bodom - Bodom After Midnight
Dimmu Borgir - In Death's Embrace
Norther - Dream

Canibal Corpse - Dead Human Collection
Canibal Corpse - Fucked with a knife (live)
Canibal Corpse - Hammer smashed face
Norther - day of redemption
In Flames - Episode 666
