Hey there and thank you for commenting on my sketchbook! You've got some really nice studies going on and that figure drawing style is looking really cool. If I may make a suggestion, I would focus a little more on realism at this point to get a better understanding of the human body. Even when you heavily stylize the human figure, it's still noticeable when there are anatomy flaws. I think you are well on your way, and paying more attention to proportion and structure will really push your work to the next level.

Top advice. Thanks! I do tend to give in to expressing myself more often than studying reference material. And thanks for stopping by.

    What a stirling idea!

Yesterday my girlfriend went for a job interview in Stirling, just East of Adelaide. A very leafy green spot with lots of cafes and pubs, and a man selling roasted chestnuts as I drove past in the car. I had about an hour to kill while I waited so I got out my sketchbook and some pencils in the Stirling Hotel.

One older guy interested me by the way he fiddled with his hair, but he didn't hang around long after getting his drinks.

I positioned myself in a more inconspicuous spot a while later, and managed to make a longer study of a guy having a wine with his lunch. His striped shirt
reminded me of an image of a zebra I had seen in the morning paper, so I made a sketch of it too. Maybe I'll combine the 2 sketches later for a bit of fun.

2 beers later and I was happy with my results.

I'll come back to draw the roasted chestnut seller one day soon.

    Cheers.

Hey magicpudding, finally I found your SB! Hahahaha

Btw, I love how you do shading. Do you use normal graphite pencil? (or do you use magic pencil ;p)

Sup BluezAce. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Well, most of the sketches so far have been completed using a range of graphite pencils: Hb, 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B. But I find I use 6B and 8B the most because they give the broadest range of tones and are such a pleasure to draw with. Like butter on the page. All of my graphite sketches so far are from imagination, and not meant to be finished pieces, merely shorthand notes to be used for ideation later on in the production of finished paintings or drawings.

Will be looking for your posts. Keep on truckin.

And now for my next trick...........

Hmmmm... I've never tried that many range of graphite pencils before. I usually use mechanical pencil because I don't have to sharpen it (yes, I'm a lazy boy! Hahaha ), and only use graphite when its shading is necessary (I tend to work in "line" not "mass", that's why I often use mechanical pencil). But I think maybe it will be cool if I try many graphite pencil just like you!!

    Keep sharing, bro!

The eighth scan in post #6 is awesome, as well as post #28.
I'm loving all the anatomy you're cranking out. Try to observe anatomy from different sources though.
#28 is so good because you're trying different things. Observing planes, looking at form.
    Keep up the good work.

Unleash hell! Gave my imagination a workout last night after having completed quite a few mannekin studies. Practice, practice, practice.

Hey, thanks for dropping by my sketchbook, gave me some much needed motivation. Your latest studies are looking great, and I love the two women on the same page from the last post. Its nice to see you getting those studies while still having time to have fun, keep it up!

    Stop! You must read this.

Hey there. By the way DeeStar, thanks for your comment. I really appreciate your interest and enthusiasm, so thanks.

If you've seen my sketch book before you realise I draw from the heart mostly, without using reference. I like to accumulate ideas and images in my head for a while and then spill my guts across the page as quickly as possible. And this works fine and it's fun, but in trying to take my skills to the next level I have changed my process slightly.

I realise the importance of the silhouette in recognising a person instantly, so after having done numerous mannekin studies I have decided to work in a space of 8 heads high and draw in a gestural fashion concentrating on silhouette.

Here's the image that started me thinking like this, and a couple of other sketches which are the result of my previous method of just dancing my pencil across the page.

If you've read this far then, Thanks.

    Not great, but better.

Ok, straying a little from a sketch mainly focussing on silhouette, but they're ok.
    Both from imagination as usual......

Does this afro look big on me?

Admittedly not some of my best examples, but they do show a slightly different direction.

    Keep swimmiiiiiiing!!

Whoa, 8B pencil! In my town, there's only 6B pencil. Wonder what it's like...

Btw I love the last figure. Even though the proportion is still a bit off, but the pose is really "flowing"

Hey dood! I like your gestures, the poses are interesting I think your lacking in some fundamentals though, but I do see your working on that! So id like to suggest you try to improve your observational skills, this is underlooked sometimes but really being able to see your problems is a skill that needs to be taken care of. Up till last year I was so god damn bad at it! But after doing exercises like blind drawing, negative shape drawing and shape to shape drawing my eye registers what Im seeing alot better allowing me to notice my proportional mistakes or what ever else. Its like exercise for artists, if you dont already exercise..... which I dont HA
    Hope that helps?

    Sith Lord Malakuko

WOW! Lord Malakuko, I am honoured by your presence. I shall double my efforts!

Seriously dude, thanks for taking the time to visit and comment with some useful crit. I appreciate it. I definitely appreciate the essence of what your saying, because I do tend to only draw from imagination, and not use any observational skills at all when I draw! I'm working on changes to my process which includes incorporating observational skills, so your message is indeeeeeeed timely!

    I bow deeply.

May FORCEful drawing be with you. Always.

    Frankensteins

I thought I'd call my regular imaginative sketches frankensteins as they really are a mix match of anatomy on my journey to perfection. I did all of these last night, plus some others which aren't worth posting.

I know you're all probably sick of frankensteins, and wish I really would draw more from reference, but let me tell you why I post them. It's fun to draw them! And they show my journey from ignorance to understanding. For example, in this post, I begin to comprehend planes more than just silhouette, and my sensitivity with a pencil is also evident.

I tend not to post things I draw from reference because it's of less importance to me than trying to release what's in my heart, and observational studies require a different mind set. My imaginative sketches spring from somewhere deep inside of me, and to me represent an intuitive, subconscious pure creativity, after all the observational exercises have been done.

Having said that I am working on drawings taken from reference at the moment which I will post soon.

    Cheers.
