Need crits plz!

Hello CA

Its time to begin the great sketchbook thread. When we are all long gone the gods will come down and see that today I started a sketchbook on Conceptart.org... FINALLY

Anyway with all weirdness aside, I am looking to improve, always. And this is the best place to do that.

Quick bio about myself. I recently graduated with a bachelors in game design and development and am currently looking for work. However I really dont feel ready for the "professional" world of concept art/illustration. I love drawing more than anything and I cant help but do it. However I need some real crits and some tough love to get me to the next level. Hopefully in the process I can get some confidence with my work so ill feel ready for the professional world.

Any way, let the journey begin.

Dragon is really cool. I think that your heads look strange, could probably be corrected with alot of portrait practice and completely memorize all the facial muscles, if you haven't already. Good luck.

started reading "drawing on the right side of the brain"

what a cool book. any way thought I would share one of the exercises from it.

actually gave me a "wow" moment while drawing.

will investigate further!

Another update, Have not had one all week, Got a new job! Been busy with that.

I got Bridgemans "Human Machine" on the way from amazon. Till then I have other books to finish first!

Updated my sketchbook... its been a while, Having two jobs tends to put a hamper on my updating abilities. However I am still drawing at least an hour a day I just dont have the updates to follow up on that...

Either way I have yet to get any real crits from this sketch book so I would love some pointers.

Agent,

I am really excited that you're working from imagination so much. I commend you for your ambition.

Some notes:

1. Your lines are too dark and they are often fussy. Don't try to nail the "final" lines at first. Even the Old Masters built up drawings in layers. Work out the gesture and the aspect and orientation of your forms lightly (perhaps in a hard graphite) and then use darker materials to develop the drawing.

2. Your work often feels flat to me. Part of that is your heavy reliance on contour but I would recommend that you use your mass conceptions in every drawing. Boxes, spheroids (balls and eggs), cylinders, and cones. If you construct your figures and characters this way I can almost guarantee that even before mastering anatomy, your work will feel much more alive and convincing. Remember that even the finest details can and should be conceived of 3 Dimensionally.

3. You need to study anatomy seriously. I recommend Artistic Anatomy by Richer, Bridgman, Peck, Hale, and Vilppu are all great resources though Bridgman can be very hard to decipher. Your faces will only improve once you're able to draw the skull correctly in perspective for faces are little more than skulls with noses and ears.

I think that those points are more than enough for now but I will watch this thread and comment on updates if you like. Keep up the good work and don't be daunted. Any skill worth achieving will be a lifelong struggle. We have committed ourselves to one of the most difficult and oldest creative disciplines on Earth.

Thank you for the reply! and I can thankfully say I am one step ahead of you... well at least one of your crits... Got a good deal on some bridgeman books the other day. And they are a little tricky to decipher.

Either way they are a building block along the way.

Also good call on the basic shapes, its an idea I have just recently started to realize.

Nice sketchbook... I can see you're working hard, some good progress here already. Has anyone mentioned the Andrew Loomis books? They're great for setting out the basic proportions and placement for figure drawing and portraits, I'd also highly recommend looking through conceptart reference and inspiration thread... lots of free books and people who know what they're doing. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=30 Anyway keep it up.
